The R44 was the first 75 foot car for the New York Subway.
The R44 was the first subway car in which a warning tone sounded immediately before the doors begin to close as the train prepares to leave the station; the tone consists of two notes which are often described as "bim-bam" since they are the same as the first two notes of the Westminster Chimes.
The R44s set an official world speed record, for subway trains, of 87.75 mph (141.2 km/h), with TA personnel noting that the consist was still accelerating as it approached the end of the designated 5.9 mile (9.5 km) long test track.

The R46 subway car was built by Pullman Standard in Chicago, Illinois in 1975-1978 for the IND and BMT routes of the New York Subway.
The R46 order was 754 cars and numbered from 500-1278, after bing rebuilt in 1990-1991 they were renumbered to 5482-6258.
Only a few years before, it was the R-16 series of subway cars that were considered the slightest reliable in the system, and they were ironically taking the place of the newest cars in the fleet.

In their final years of operation, most of the BX units were converted to B-types by substitution of a former A car for the trailer, and a number simply had the trailer removed to form a two-car unit, called a BT (for "Twin").
