Raaf accompanied his father on house calls that in those days might include surgery in the kitchen or living room with a member of the family administering a chloroform or ether anesthetic.
Raaf's family and a close group of neurosurgical friends were fortunate to be invited each fall to the annual meeting of the Rogue River Neurosurgical Society, during which the scientific program was replaced by dawn to dusk angling for trout and steelhead salmon, and celebrating success with the famous Rogue River gin fizz.
Raaf, M.D., is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lorene Rardin Raaf, age 93; two children, John H. Raaf of Cleveland, Ohio, and Jean Raaf Binnewies of Portland; four grandchildren, Jennifer, John C., Sabrina and Margot; and two great-grandchildren, Carly and Justin.

The RAAF is now redressing that imbalance between tactical and conceptual skills by developing an Australian air power doctrine and recording it as an air force document.
The RAAF must be commanded operationally at the highest practical level by a single, experienced commander with expertise in the application of air power.
The success of the RAAF in applying air power across the full spectrum of operations and roles will be dependent on its ability to meet the six imperatives--command, qualitative edge, attrition management, centre of gravity, timing, and preparedness.

It is an Institutional tragedy for the RAAF that the story of its Bomber Command crews can't be fully reconstructed, and that their experiences weren't lived out within a wholly Australian context.
Four RAAF squadrons fought in Bomber Command's worst night of the war, the notorious strike against Nuremberg on 30/31 March 1944 when ninety-five of 608 aircraft - almost 16 per cent - were lost.
The time is long overdue for the men of the RAAF who fought in the great air battles over Germany and Italy during World War II to receive far more generous recognition of their extraordinary achievements and courage.

There is no doubt that the RAAF today is a high-technology force, but it is still a small force with a decreasing inventory and, paradoxically, is subject to increasing demands for air services.
Their project is to develop a manual of air power doctrine for use within the RAAF and to determine a means by which this recorded doctrine can be continually verified and updated within the organization.

RAAF FAC History by Pete Smith
During the Second World War the RAAF Order of Battle included several Army Co-operation Squadrons specializing in target identification and reconnaissance, and by war's end some experience had been gained with the Royal Air Force (RAF) liaison officers attached to British land formations in Europe and the Middle-East.
RAAF participation in USAF FAC operations was an incidental by-product of Australia's general involvement in the Vietnam conflict and was the result of the personal initiative of a series of three individual officers initially sent into the theatre on other duties.
Based on his earlier fighter experience, he volunteered through HQ RAAF Vietnam to serve the remainder of his tour as a FAC, and after the usual staff level consultations, his offer was gratefully accepted by the USAF.
