The squadron was formed at RAF Scampton during World War II on the March 15, 1943 with the purpose of attacking three major dams on the Ruhr in Germany: the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe.
All three RAF attacks on Tirpitz were led by Wing Commander JB "Willy" Tait, who had succeeded Wing Commander Cheshire as CO of No. 617 Squadron in July 1944.
When the Squadron was reformed with the Tornado it was originally based at RAF Marham, but is now located at RAF Lossiemouth.

No.1435 Squadron was unique among RAF squadrons in that its designation was not officially approved until after the unit had been operating for some time.
The number 1435 had been previously used by No.1435 Flight, a night fighter unit also based at Malta which had recently been disbanded, and when a new Spitfire unit was formed it adopted this number.
Operations had begun on 23 July 1942 as a flight and untl the end of the year it was engaged in fighter defence duties.

The RAF’s desperate fight to retain control of the diminutive Mediterranean island, and the defiant courage of the people of Malta, is one of the epic stories of World War Two.
By April 1942 the RAF was down to just six serviceable Spitfires and Hurricanes, Allied convoys were being decimated unopposed, and Malta was in danger of starvation.
This flight was to reinforce Malta's handful of outdated Gladiator's and few surviving Hurricanes and on 16 August was amalgamated to become 261 Squadron.

In early 1943 Flights of the Photographic Reconnaissance Units were raised to Squadron status with 'A' Flight, No 2 PRU becoming No 680 on 1 February 1943.
No 1435 Flight was formed in Malta as a night fighter unit on 4 December 1941 but it disbanded in June 1942.
On 2 August 1942 the unit, being larger than a flight was formally raised to squadron status but instead of being given a new number, it was simply raised from 1435 Flight to 1435 Squadron.

The first of the squadron's four Globemasters (C-17 in USAF service) was delivered to the RAF on May 17 2001, arriving at Brize Norton, Oxfordshire on May 23.
