Dalton Barracks, formerly RAF Abingdon (IATA: ABB, ICAO: EGUD), was a Royal Air Force station near Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
Abingdon was also the home of no 6 AEF (Air Experience Flight) operating between 6-8 DHC Chipmunks for ATC/CCF Air Cadet flight experience training.
RAF Benson continues to use Abingdon as a diversion airfield and for helicopter training.

Stanton Harcourt - satellite to Abingdon - comes in to use on Sep 1940, and is used to disperse aircraft from Abingdon and help with night flying training.
Eventually the RAF is withdrawn and the airfield handed over to the Army in the early 1990's.
RAF Abingdon is now known as 'Dalton Barracks'.

It was delivered first to the RAF Flying College but soon transferred to 527 Sqd at RAF Watton.
When 245 Sqd closed down in 1963 WH869 transferred to 98 Sqd at RAF Tangmere where it stayed until 1970 when it was again transferred to 7 Sqd's B.2 Flight, newly formed at RAF St Mawgan.
At Abingdon it served as a Rescue Training airframe where the particular crew arrangements and positions of the Canberra were fully utilised.

Her days with the RAF were numbered however, when the aircraft was declared non-effective on the 16th of June 1953, and then sold back to Vickers Armstrongs on the 4th of February 1954.
It was moved to the gate at RAF Uxbridge during 1960 and repainted, somehow being given the Chipmunk serial WP916 in the process.
In 1963 she was removed from Uxbridge, her correct serial was restored to her, and she was transferred to the gate at RAF Northolt where she was to remain, apart from some renovation work which took place in 1968, until the 23rd of July 1970.

Born near Howden (which would later become the RAF Airship Base), he father was a Curate at Laxton.
Joining the Navy in 1913, he served aboard HMS Indomitable and took part in the chase of the Goeben and Breslau and later in the bombardment of the Dardenelles and the Battle of Dogger Bank.
At the end of war, he remained in the RAF and remained on airships, becoming a 1st Class Navigator following a course in 1920.

With a totally relaxed atmosphere, a mere £6 adult admission charge, and on the day, copious amounts of warm sunshine, it would be difficult to imagine a better means of whiling away a Sunday afternoon.

I went to the RAF 50th Anniversary Airshow at RAF Abingdon in 1968.
I also remember a beautiful Hawker Hind that was presented to the RAF by the Afghan Airforce during the show.
The programme was the 1968 RAF year book, it had a seperate insert for the flying programme.

Unfortunately the RAF have cancelled all display appearances of their Merlin helicopter, so we have lost that from the line-up, but we do now have a flying display from a Royal Navy Lynx instead.
The Vulcan To The Sky Trust will be present at the show with their stall, supporting the efforts to get the last airworthy Vulcan Bomber into the air...
It looks like we will also have flying displays from both of the RAF's big helicopters - Merlin and Chinook - much more information about the flying and static line-up is on the What's On page.

 Abingdon’s Terrible Air Crash (6th July 1965)
The local victims are buried in RAF Section of Spring Rd Cemetery; you may care to visit them especially on the 6th of July.
Shortly after takeoff the pilot requested a priority landing at RAF Abingdon as he was experiencing some stiffness in the elevator controls.
The relief crew was waiting for us on the apron and they took the aircraft from us in an 'engine running handover' and departed for a 20 minute trip to Abingdon where they retired to their messes for the night.
