 Belfast International Airport - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is also known as Aldergrove, after the village of that name lying immediately to the west of the airport.
With the end of the war, Aldergrove remained open for Royal Air Force aircraft and for the fledgling civil traffic to and from Northern Ireland.
The route was Glasgow to Aldergrove and the flight was operated by Midland and Scottish Air Ferries.

RAF Aldergrove first opened in 1918 but was not designated as an operational RAF station until 1925.
Aldergrove was designated as a dispersal airfield for the RAF's V bomber force in the 1950s and was included in a reduced list of 26 airfields in 1962.
Aldergrove is now home to a mixed force of helicopters, which operate across the province in support of the British Army and Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The Puma was introduced at RAF Odiham (EGVO) in Oct 1971 and the unit's Whirlwinds were passed on, with those of 1563 Flight to 84 Squadron in Dec 1971.
Formed 15 Oct 1941 at RAF Valley as an Air-Sea Rescue unit with Walrus and Lysander fixed wing aircraft, it was disbanded at Harrowbeer, north of Plymouth on 15 Feb 1945.
RAF Dragonflies were mainly used for SAR duties and served with the CFS Helicopter Flight, the first front line RAF helicopter squadron (and the Casevac Flight that preceded it) and the Queen's Flight.

Preparations for the arrival of the first RAF Typhoons in 2004 meant that No 56 (Reserve) Squadron, the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with its Tornado F3s moved north to Leuchars whilst the Tornado F3 Operational Evaluation Unit moved to nearby RAF Waddington.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on Ma 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

The announcement by HM Government that additional Support Helicopters (SH), a mixture of Chinook and the EH101, would be procured, combined with the decision to close RAF Laarbruch, required reassessment of the future disposition of the SH Force.
The major changes that have taken place are that; in June 1997 No 33 Squadron and its Pumas relocated from RAF Odiham to RAF Benson, No 18 Squadron and its Chinooks relocated from RAF Laarbruch to RAF Odiham and the Pumas from RAF Laarbruch relocated to No 72 Squadron at RAF Aldergrove.
Progressively, over the next four or five years, the completely new EH101, which will be known as the Merlin Mk3, will enter service and be based at RAF Aldergrove and RAF Benson, extra Chinooks will join the three resident squadrons at RAF Odiham and the Wessex will finally be retired.

Following the retirement of the last Wessex in 2003, the Puma is the oldest helicopter in RAF service.
The 'package deal' between the UK and France on helicopter collaboration dates back to February 1967.The programme covered the development of three helicopter types - the Puma, Gazelle and Lynx.
Production of the aircraft was shared between the two countries, the UK making about 20% by value of the airframe, slightly less for the engine, as well as assembling the aircraft procured for the RAF.

I was stationed at Aldergrove in Northern Ireland, which was wonderful as the people were so kind to me. They used to stop me in the street and invite me to their homes for tea and a chat.
We were also fed well in the RAF — I suppose the people that suffered the most with rationing were the people at home.
Looking back, we had a good time during the war, but all this was spoilt due to an incident that occurred one day at camp.

It is a purpose built courtroom with modern facilities and is sufficiently large enough to handle a trial involving six defendants, their counsels and numerous witnesses.

Each year the squad of about 40 personnel compete for places in their respective teams with the selectors looking to pick the top 9 men and 6 women.
Dry slopes and the Snowdome (Tamworth) are used extensively with the RAF Dry Slope Championships being the focal point of the summer season.
This is also the time where, as mentioned before, the selection panel decide on who has made the team and will continue race training in preparation for the main RAF Championships and the Inter-Service competition against the British Army and Royal Navy.

On June 2, 1994 a 7 Sqn Chinook HC.2 (ZD576) crashed into the Mull of Kintyre while carrying 25 senior members of the British security forces from RAF Aldergrove, Belfast to Inverness.
All passengers and the four crew were killed.

Miss Hulme, who worked in air traffic control and was latterly stationed at RAF Aldergrove near Belfast, took the £490 course run at the For Your Eyes Only dancing school.
Yesterday Miss Hulme claimed that the RAF paid her £2,100 to cover the course, flights to England, accommodation in a four-star hotel and expenses over four weekends.
