During the Cold War years was the main role of RAF was the defence of the continent of Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union, including holding the UK's nuclear deterrent for a number of years.
RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.
RAF personnel who have risen to prominence either by their actions whilst serving, or subsequently are detailed at List of famous Royal Air Force members.

Ascension was first discovered in 1501 by Juan da Nova Castella, but the discovery apparently went unrecorded, and the island was re-discovered on Ascension Day 1503 by Alfonso d'Albuquerque.
Ascension became strategically significant with the exile of Napoleon to St. Helena; the British were concerned that it could be used in any attempt to rescue Napoleon.
Ascension has a population of about 1,250 (mostly Saints) and is a communications centre (BBC and Cable and Wireless) in addition to the RAF and USAF presence.

Ascension came to brief international notice during the Falklands war when it served as a staging post for the British forces en route to and from the Falklands.
Ascension has an airstrip although there are no commercial flights to Ascension; RAF flights from Brize Norton to the Falklands stop at Ascension, and USAF flights from Patrick AFB (Florida) serve the US Base on the island.
Ascension used to be a "closed" island but tourist access has recently become available, although there are relatively few facilities for tourists or casual visitors.

Argentina has continued to claim sovereignty over the islands, and the dispute was used by the military junta dictatorship as an excuse to invade and briefly occupy the islands before being defeated in the two-month-long undeclared Falklands War in 1982 by a United Kingdom task force which returned the islands to British control.

Amongst the abundant wildlife around the island is the sooty tern or wideawake.
With the use of Simonstown in South Africa ruled out for obvious political reasons, Ascension Island with its airfield was the only possible forward base.
Wideawake had one runway and limited dispersal areas and helicopters could only land there because of the volcanic dust, there was no port, and the one jetty was three miles away and not always useable because of the Atlantic waves.

All the beaches on Ascension are of eye dazzling white sand but due to the unpredictable tides and sea states around Ascension, swimming in the sea is only advised at English Bay and Comfortless Cove and even then with caution.
Ascension Island has two swimming pools that are free to use and which are open to the public.
The RAF flies these in on the regular Tristar flights and they are obviously a little out of date by the time they arrive.

Physical remnants of Hood are rare indeed, but thanks to the efforts of the Royal Air Force (RAF), two of Hood's 5.5" guns are still preserved on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic.
After the war, the guns were left to rot and when the RAF arrived during Corporate (the Falkland Islands War operations of 1982), these historic guns were a sorry sight covered in thick red dust.
The job was made even more difficult by the floods earlier this year which washed away the access roads to the site and at one time it was feared that the task would have to be abandoned.

Command of RAF Ascension Island will be transferring from Headquarters Strike Command, based at RAF High Wycombe, to the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ).
RAF Ascension Island will then be known as Ascension Island Base.
The change is for the better, as no so long ago the RAF station here was faced with closure.

The island was discovered by the Portuguese seafarer, Joao da Nova, on Ascension Day, 1501.
The island is a breeding site for the green turtle and various species of sea bird, notably the sooty tern, or wideawake, and the frigate bird.
N.B. : visitors to Ascension Island require an entry permit from the island’s Administrator which they need to obtain prior to booking their flight !!
