Bentley Priory became famous during the Battle of Britain, as the Headquarters of Fighter Command, where Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding led the battle that turned the tide of the War in the Allies favour.
It was during Hamilton's possession that Bentley Priory acquired distinction as a rendezvous of political and literary celebrities.
In spite of a private extension of the railway line from Wealdstone to Stanmore for the convenience of residents, Bentley Priory as a hotel was not a financial success and in 1908, on Mr Gordon's death, it changed hands once again to become a girl's school.

After the school closed in 1924, Bentley Priory lay unused for nearly two years until the Air Ministry bought the main building and 40 acres of grounds for about £25,000, and from March 25, 1926, Bentley Priory has been essentially closed to the public which owns it.
RAF Bentley Priory will be open for free, two-hour guided tours on August 31 and September 1.

In April 1940, Number 713 Defence Squadron was formed at HQ Fighter Command, RAF Bentley Priory to operate in an improvised Light anti-aircraft role during the Battle of Britain.
In February 1942, with the creation of the RAF Regiment, the Squadron was reformed as No 2713 (Rifle) Squadron RAF Regiment and, in 1943, it formed the nucleus of the Fighter Command Battle School at RAF Hazlemere.
On 13 July 1964, the Squadron was reformed in the field role at the RAF Regiment Depot, Catterick.

Bentley Priory was famously the HQ of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.
I went to an RAF wedding reception there as a kid about 35 years ago - and had my pic taken in front of them I was a plane geek at an early age and I'm pretty certain they were real then (I could be wrong).
Now that RAF Bentley Priory is to close (no sense of history, some people) I wonder where these exhibits (particularly the Lightning) will end up.

Various RAF, RCAF and USAAF units now used Biggin Hill as the Uk terminal for their services and the station was probably now busier then it was when it had been a fighter station.
The RAF retained the North Camp which became home to the Officers’ and Aircrew Selection Centre from April 1959 and this remained until it re-located to Cranwell in around 2001.
The only remaining RAF element is now St George’s Chapel, which houses the Books of Remembrance for the personnel who lost their lives whilst serving at this famous station.
