RAF Biggin Hill was the home airbase of the first aircraft to take part in air to ground radio communications, and of the first British aircraft to shoot down a German aircraft in World War II.
It was a crucial RAF Sector airfield during the Battle of Britain.

The aircraft is a Spitfire, one from 607 Squadron stationed on rotation at the Biggin Hill RAF Station, a major hotspot in WW2.
The Spitfire is mounted on a pole outside the RAF Memorial Chapel built in 1951, along side a Hurricane that is mounted on another pole.
As RAF Biggin was flattened, it was obviously not a very good place to leave a new and unusual vehicle.

Today, the RAF's 75 year pressenceat Biggin Hill and in particular the 454 allied aircrew who gave their lifes in the Second World War on operations from the Biggin Hill Sector, are commemorated in St George's Royal Air Force Chapel of Remembrance.
One of the first events in the Biggin Hill civil calendar was its fairly intensive use by a considerable proportion of the entrants in the Daily Mail London to Paris Air Race in July 1959.

Hill went on to attack a second bomber which crashed into the edge of a wood south of the Estuary and exploded.
Hill then directed a rescue launch to the scene and the crew were picked up.
Hill's aircraft was one of the first hit and he went down in flames to crash into high trees at West Hongham in Kent.

London Biggin Hill Airport (IATA: BQH, ICAO: EGKB), formerly RAF Biggin Hill, is an airport at Biggin Hill in London Borough of Bromley, England.
The RAF station eventually closed in 1992 as the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre moved to RAF Cranwell.
Biggin Hill is also the location of an annual airshow, usually on the first weekend in June.

The absence of a rail link makes Biggin Hill a very affordable place to live and new properties continue to be built wherever planning permission can be obtained, with growth between 1971 and 2001 estimated at around 40 per cent.
Biggin Hill occupies an important place in British history as a military airfield, familiarly known as ‘Biggin-on-the-Bump’ or simply ‘Biggin’.
The airfield was downgraded to non-operational status in 1958 and the RAF finally left in 1980.

With the demise of the North Weald shows some time ago, Biggin Hill was left as London's only major airshow and thanks to skyrocketing public liability insurance rates after the September 11th terrorist attacks in the USA and a lack of big sponsors, it seemed that this show, too, was doomed.
RAF participation wasn't bad considering the recent ending of the war in Iraq, with Tucano, Hawk, Jaguar and Tornado F3 solo displays as well as, of course, the Red Arrows.
A single Spitfire joyously rolling over Biggin Hill, this most famous of Battle of Britain airfields, can bring on a shiver to the most stoic of characters and it was simply the perfect end to a damn good show.

It is known that members of the R.A.F. visited the tea gardens as described in Ken Wilson’s book "The Story of Biggin Hill" on page 22 "141 Squadron removed the four foot high wooden teapot from the front of the shop owned by Alphonse Haentjens.

The airfield at Biggin Hill dates back to World War I, though the heroic action of pilots based there during the Battle of Britain in the early years of Worlld War II made it internationally famous.
Biggin Hill was an ideal location for an airfield, being strategically placed to defend the capital: high, flat and with a huge undivided field.
The base was taken over by Bromley Council in 1973 and the RAF moved out in 1992.

A short history of the victorious rebellion of British servicemen in the air force who were living in appalling conditions, soon after World War I. This dispute was in many ways typical of the smaller struggles of the wave of mutinies which swept the British Armed Forces towards the end of World War One.
Most of them slept in tents, the camp was a sea of mud and all the duck-boards and other stealable fuel had been burnt to obtain warmth in the freezing weather.
Support came from the men of 141 Squadron of the RAF stationed in the neighbouring North Camp, who refused to intervene on the side of the authorities.

On 3 Sep 39, the day war broke out, the research establishment at RAF Bawdsey was disbanded and relocated to many different places because the location was considered to be high risk being on the south east coast of England.
Flt Lt J R T Bradford was appointed to command the unit with the acting rank of Squadron Leader, the initial J stood for Joseph leading to the colloquial name of "Joe’s Academy" being assigned to this first attempt at a School; subsequent nicknames may not have had such a friendly connotation.

Control at Biggin Hill warned of unidentified aircraft in the area, which proved later to be two Spitfires from Tangmere flown by inexperienced pilots.

Although an eye-catching and evocative sight, the Hurricane's steel and timber frame had suffered very, very badly from exposure to the elements and it was obvious that something had to be done very quickly to save further deterioration.
So bad was the overall condition that MAPS requested the MOD to release Hurricane LF 738 from RAF Biggin Hill and this aircraft was removed to Rochester Airport later the same year so that the task of rebuilding could be reduced by exchanging parts from both aircraft.
BN 230 was the first RAF fighter over Dieppe on 19th August 1942, leading the Tangmere Wing in 'Operation Jubilee'.

We had lots of RAF station visits in those days (when there were lots of RAF stations!!), but more accurate records are not available.
There was a RAF policeman who had lost an eye and had a glass eye fitted.
His party piece was to sit next to a FNG (Fenton New Guy) at the bar and then take his glass eye out place it in his pint and tell the eye to keep an eye on his pint while he went to the toilet.

 RAF Upper Heyford Memorials
I do not have any details of the guy on the right or if he was on the fateful flight in question.
I don't know when he was born, nor do I remember the exact day of his passing at the base, but his departure took us all by surprise.
He was assigned to the 20th Supply Sq., 20 TFW, as Chief Inspector, where he retired from active duty as a Master Sergeant in 1974.
