Preparations for the arrival of the first RAF Typhoons in 2004 meant that No 56 (Reserve) Squadron, the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with its Tornado F3s moved north to Leuchars whilst the Tornado F3 Operational Evaluation Unit moved to nearby RAF Waddington.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).

Brize Norton is the largest RAF Station in the UK.
Brize was opened in 1937, fought a bombing war from '39 to '45and was used to train airborne forces, before being handed over to the USAF in 1950.
Also based at Brize Norton is No 1 Parachute Training School, which includes the RAF Parachute Display Team, the Falcons.

It is the largest RAF station and is basically the RAF's version of Mildenhall, home to the tanker and jet transport fleet.

RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire is to close by 2012 with the loss of almost 600 jobs at the transport and logistics support airfield.
In 1956 the station became the first RAF airfield to operate jet transports when the first Comet C2 transport aircraft were deployed.
RAF Lyneham, a major tactical transport station, is home to five Hercules squadrons, an Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, RAuxAF, and the UK Mobile Air Movements Squadron, which is responsible for establishing facilities at temporary bases.

A.T.C. travelled to RAF Brize Norton to fly in a VC10 transporter-tanker.We left Cowbridge at 0500hrs and arrived at RAF Brize Norton by 0730hrs.
However, after a lot of arranging by the RAF and a lot of praying by us, we were finally told that it was possible for us to fly with 10 Sqn, in aircraft no. XV104.
RAF Brize Norton is the RAF airport for the UK.and whilst we were there, we met several troops who were awaiting flights to bases such as, Cyprus and Gibraltar.

Re-registered ZD493 the last flight was made to RAF Brize Norton where she was stripped of spares and left.
Acquired by the RAF as a spares source for the K4 conversion program, this aircraft was ferried to Brize Norton and broken up there in 1982.
The fuselage was transported to the RAF Fire Fighting and Safety School, Catterick, and later to RAF Manston for a similar purpose.

No 4624 Squadron was formed in 1982 at Royal Air Force Station Brize Norton to provide a pool of trained Movements personnel to reinforce the regular Movements organisation and undertake air movements duties in support of the RAF and allied operations worldwide.
In 1990, the Squadron was privileged to provide the entire Colour Party for the parade at Buckingham Palace commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and again on 5th April 1997 at RAFC Cranwell for the RAuxAF/RAFVR Amalgamation Ceremony.
In January 1991, the Squadron was mobilised for the Gulf War and personnel were deployed to RAF Brize Norton, Lyneham, Cyprus and Germany, as well as other locations within the UK.

One of those, Serco Aerospace, has further involvement with RAF Brize Norton : it seems to handle everything, from aircraft washing facilities to computer maintenance and security services [8].
Those new aircrafts are likely to be hosted at RAF Brize Norton, as they'll replace the current fleet.
