RAF Bruggen, Germany was until June 15, 2001 a major station of the Royal Air Force.
RAF Bruggen was situated next to the village of Elmpt, approximately 43 km west of Düsseldorf near the German-Netherlands border.
The decision to remove all of RAF assets from Germany was taken in 1996.

RAF Brüggen was named originally after the nearest railhead, in the North Rhine Westphalia village of Brüggen; however, it is actually situated just outside the village of Elmpt.
The RAF Station was constructed on drained marshland within a heavily forested area during the period February 1952 to July 1953.
The demise of RAF Brüggen, as the last Main Operating Base in Mainland Europe, was made public in 1998 and the withdrawal process began in April 1999 with the disbandment of 17 (Fighter) Squadron.

Now part of the Marham Wing, 31 Squadron's aircraft and crews were part of the RAF Tornado force in the Gulf War of 1991 and the Squadron continued to fly on regular operations over Iraq.
On Jan 1 1995 the Squadron was declared operational in the Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) role equipped with the Air Launched Anti Radiation Missile ALARM Anti Radiation Missile.
In 2001 No 31 Squadron moved to RAF Marham, and in 2003 formed the core of the Ali Al Salem Air Combat Wing, operating over Iraq during Operation Resinate South and Operation Telic.

After almost 50 years, the RAF is withdrawing from Bruggen and, indeed, from stationing in Germany as a UK national formation.
Wildenrath and, nostalgically, one last time over Bruggen itself, as they bid a final farewell on behalf of all RAF aircrew to the bases that played such a major role in the defence of Europe during the Cold war.
Following the decision in 1996 to withdraw the RAF from Germany and close the last remaining flying bases, the draw down of RAF Bruggen began in April 1999 when No 17(Fighter) Squadron was disbanded.
