The Earldom of Mar and Buchan formed one of the seven original Scottish earldoms; later the Earl of Buchan became separated from Mar. There is also a town of Buchan.

RAF Buchan is a Royal Air Force station near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire.
Following the collapse of the Warsaw Pact Buchan took on the executive control of air defence in the UK's northern airspace, reducing Saxa Vord and RRH Benbecula to Remote Radar Heads while Buchan became a Control Reporting Centre.
Operations formally ceased at RAF Buchan on 26 November 2004 and the domestic site was officially downsized on 31 March 2005.

Buchan started its operational life at the beginning of the ROTOR period as a Ground Control Intercept station (GCI).
Buchan was also equipped with a more unusual set: a Westinghouse TPS-43, which was an Argentinian radar captured during the Falklands campaign.
Buchan survived the passing of the ROTOR period and the rapid changes in Air Ministry policy and still survives today as a part of The United Kingdom Air Surveillance and Control System (UK ASACS).

Full details of the remainder of RAF Pevensey’s operational career are not known to this writer at present; however, the south coast radars were heavily attacked by the Luftwaffe on Aldertag, 12 August 1940.
To provide cover for the Sussex area, a site was selected across the road from RAF Pevensey, and the radar installed first as a vehicle-mounted mobile unit, then hutted, and finally emplaced towards the end of the conflict in a substantial brick "Happidrome" building.

In March 1943 RAF Boulmer was re-opened as a satellite airfield to house the advanced flights of 57 Operational Training Unit (a Spitfire training Unit based at RAF Eshott, Boulmer's parent unit).
The underground facilities at RAF Boulmer were vacated in January 1982 to accommodate the implementation of the Improved UKADGE programme (the CRC operated from an above ground facility during this period).
On 1 September 2004, RAF Boulmer also assumed responsibility, in addition to the Type 93 radar at Brizlee Wood (8 miles west of the Station) for the Type 92 radars at Buchan and Benbecula.

Situated on the North East Coast of Scotland just south of Peterhead and overlooking the North Sea, RAF Buchan is home to around 250 personnel and coordinates all aspects of air defence for the Northern UK Air Defence Region, working closely with other UK CRCs at RAF Neatishead and the standby unit at RAF Boulmer.
A decision was recently made by the Ministry of Defence to relocate the CRC function of Buchan to the standby unit at Boulmer, reducing Buchan to a remote radar site with a much reduced manning level.

Last May, when the Ministry of Defence announced plans to concentrate its strategic defence centre at RAF Neatishead in Norfolk, personnel at the north-east base had been told that 71 service posts and 21 civilian workers would be retained to operate RAF Buchan as a radar station.
Alex Salmond, the Scottish National Party MP for Banff and Buchan, who led last year’s abortive campaign to retain RAF Buchan’s strategic role, said he would be demanding an explanation for the "remarkable change" in the Ministry of Defence’s position.
He said: "Obviously, we have known for some time that RAF Buchan was to be run down over the next two years, but this news will come as a bitter blow to the 20 or so civilian staff who had been led to believe that their jobs would be retained.

Alan Buchan, the publisher and editor of the North East Weekly, a free sheet based in Peterhead, was arrested by officers from Grampian Police in connection with the publication of an editorial in the latest issue of the newspaper, headlined "Perverts and Refugees".
Mr Buchan was charged under a section of the Public Order Act which gives the police powers to arrest any person whom they suspect of publishing or distributing written material that is threatening, abusive, or insulting and intended to stir up racial hatred.
Mr Buchan, a former fisherman who stood for the Scottish People's Alliance in the last general election, has now been arrested and charged in connection with the allegedly inflammatory content of the article.

Although the Type 80 was a robust and pretty reliable machine, old age could not be prevented from taking its toll with the one at Buchan and one of the ways in which senility manifested itself was that, to put it rather impolitely, it developed trouble with its balls.
Strangely the spacers are not shown in the exploded view on the previous page but that diagram clearly indicates the awful job it would have been to gain access to the ballrace if replacement was required.
Both civilian contractors and his own RAF resources had to be organised and a major hazard was the changeable weather experienced in the north east of Scotland, a windless period of least a week being needed, so that minor miracle had to be organised too.
