One particular Chinook, registered ZA718 with the Royal Air Force and known by its original callsign 'Bravo November', has seen action in every major operation the RAF has been deployed to in the helicopter's 25-year service life.

The Chinook Wing, which forms the heavy-lift element of the Joint Helicopter Command, is based at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

The Chinook is a tandem-rotored, twin engined medium-lift helicopter and first entered service with the RAF in 1982.

The British Ministry of Defence has said it will not be re-opening its investigation into the crash of an RAF Chinook helicopter at the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland six years ago, in which 29 people including 10 RUC Special Branch members and a number of senior intelligence officers were killed.
The aircraft had been on a flight from RAF Aldergrove to a destination in Scotland, apparently taking the passengers to a top-level conference on security in June 1994.
A leaked report written by aeronautical experts in Britain concluded that the RAF's verdict that the crash had been caused by the gross negligence of the two pilots was not sustainable.

In his book Chinook Crash (2004, ISBN 1-84415-074-7), Steuart Campbell speculates that the crew could have made a navigational error in poor visibility by mistaking the fog signal station for the lighthouse.
