The initial noise survey at RAF Church Fenton was conducted between February and March 1989.
Church Fenton was reviewed in November 1993 and again in April 01 which concluded that the noise environment had not changed since 1989 and therefore no new survey was required.

The future of RAF Church Fenton had seemed uncertain after it was announced that the Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron might leave the base.
Defence Minister Adam Ingram, said in a letter to Selby MP John Grogan that RAF Church Fenton would continue to be used, and may even be used to train RAF specialists such as engineers.
Mr Grogan added: "The villagers of Church Fenton and Ulleskelf are proud of their long association with the RAF and of having this defence base in the area."

Church Fenton opened in 1937 as a grass airfield and the first units to arrive were No72 with Gloster Gladiators and No213 with Gloster Gauntlets.
A claim to fame for Church Fenton was the only Victoria Cross awarded to Fighter Command during the war and to one of it's own, Flight Lieutenant J B Nicholson.
Church Fenton remained a fighter station up until 1959 when it was transferred to Flying Training Command and in 1962 No7 Flying Training School was formed here with Jet Provost aircraft.

when we cadets and staff were shown around RAF 207 Sqn HQ and were given a brief presentation on the squadrons history and shown around the operations section and the Hangar which contained their Tucano T1 aircraft.
On the Tuesday cadets were taken around some of the different sections of the base, also some cadets got the chance to experience the Tucano Simulator used by the RAF to train its pilots through basic handling and emergency drills for the Tucano.
The trip to 207R at RAF Linton on Ouse has been one of the highlights of 2005 for 207 ATC and no doubt will be repeated in the future.

With effect from July 2003, RAF Woodvale will also train up to 17 Direct Entrant pilots to their streaming point, since the RAF element of the Joint Elementary Flying School contract is to be absorbed into the contract that covers UAS flying.

YUAS was formed in 1969 by the amalgamation of Hull and Leeds Universities Air Squadrons.
The squadron was disbanded in 1943 only to reform in 1950 when it flew from RAF Brough to the west of Hull and had a thriving Town Headquarters in that city.
After amalgamation in 1969, the squadron operated from RAF Church Fenton near Tadcaster before moving to RAF Finningley outside Doncaster in 1975.

Mr Grogan believes the facility is important to the economy of Church Fenton, and if this is removed, it could have a serious impact on area businesses.
Mr Grogan added Church Fenton had historic links with the RAF and it would be a shame to see it used for other activities, as Sherburn or Elvington have been.

The largest bomb ever tackled by the RAF and probably the largest ever rendered safe by any BD Unit was one of their own.
This 12000 pounder known as Tallboy was found in the silt and mud at the base of the Sorpe Dam in 1958 after the dam was partially drained.
Shortly after the reorganisation of the RAF BD Squads into Squadrons and Flights in April 1943 came one of the worst bomb disasters in Britain.

 The Fenton Flyers
It came as a surprise for me to learn that one of the oldest known surviving Spitfires in the world was once based at RAF Church Fenton.
On April 24th 1939 it joined 'A' Flight of 72 Squadron at RAF Church Fenton and was flown by, amongst others, Battle of Britain VC Fg Officer J B Nicholson.
Upon arrival at RAF Church Fenton the aircraft was repainted as PR-O in the colours of the 609 (West Riding) Squadron RAuxAF which reformed at Fenton in 1946 and disbanded there in the same year that the Spitfire arrived.

This means that all cadets on the squadron (totalling over 80) have flown at least once, and those who have been in a little longer have flown something like 10 -12 times.
This is made possible by a good relationship with a local RAF station, RAF Church Fenton (located about 10 miles from York) for powered flying, and RAF Linton-On-Ouze These flying trips take place mainly at weekends, so as to cause minimal interference with schooling.
When flying for the first time, cadets are taken on a standard sortie, designed to show them the basics of controlling the aircraft.
