Regular flights from RAF Brize Norton link the island to the UK, as does the six-weekly arrival of the MOD cargo and resupply vessels.

RAF Cottesmore was to remain a bomber flying station, operating a variety of aircraft types, until 1943 when it was handed over to the Americans and became USAAF Station 489.
It was from RAF Cottesmore that troops of the 82nd Airborne Division took part in Operation Overlord, the invasion of Europe, and also Operation Market Garden, the famous airborne operation which saw paratroops dropping into Holland.
RAF Cottesmore was thrust into the jet age in 1954 with the arrival of the Canberra Bombers of 15, 44, 57 and 149 Squadrons.

Today, I decided to put the pleasure aside and portray RAF Cottesmore as it was intended to be portrayed, as a base that defends England's shores amidst changing times.
Cottesmore during my visits, was always home to the Tornado, possibly one of the best flying machines that the British forces have.
Then in 1943, Cottesmore was actually handed over to the United States Army Air Force and prepared for the arrival of the 316th Troop Carrier Group, which played a vital role in the initial "D" Day assaults.

RAF Wittering is actually two airfields that have merged together; unfortunately this and the A1 have made access for viewing rather difficult to say the least.
While RAF Wittering is officially 'The Home of the Harrier', you'll see far more of them at RAF Cottesmore.
The RAF Police are normally okay about photographing the Harrier, especially if you pre-empt their objections by saying you'll only photograph facing away from the gate, out towards the A1.

Preparations for the arrival of the first RAF Eurofighter Typhoons in 2004 meant that No 56(Reserve) Squadron, the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with its Tornado F3s moved north to Leuchars whilst the Tornado F3 Operational Evaluation Unit moved to nearby RAF Waddington.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
St Athan is the major RAF maintenance base for Harrier, Tornado, Jaguar, Hawk, Dominie and VC10, all of which is the responsibility of the Engineering Division.

As the longest user of the Harrier the RAF has sponsored continued improvement in the aircraft, with the GR.1, GR1A, GR.3, GR.5 and GR.7 single-seaters having served, supported by T.2, T.4, T.4A and T.10 trainers.
Until the end of the Cold War the RAF's Harrier force was primarily dedicated to supporting the British Army in Germany, with a secondary role supporting NATO's northern flank in Norway.
Like much of Britain's armed forces, the 1990s were a period of transition towards a more flexible peace-keeping and rapid reaction role for the Harriers, a move that has culminated in the creation of the Joint Force Harrier in early 2000 to bring all UK Harrier and Sea Harrier operations together under one umbrella organisation.

Clearly the RAF is involved in the serious matter of training pilots to fly extremely expensive aircraft in combat, as safely as possible.

Cottesmore first became a V bomber base in the late 1950s, under station commander Grp Capt Johnnie Johnson, the World War II Battle of Britain fighter ace.
Cottesmore Vulcans went to Gan, Butterworth and Tengah in the Far East during the confrontation with Indonesia in 1965.
It flew in the RAF Vulcan Display Flight (VDF) until her final flight in 1992 after which she was sold to C Walton Ltd and flown into that firm's Bruntingthorpe airfield base on March 23, 1993, where she has remained ever since.

The first Canberra delivered to the RAF was a B.Mk.2 on 25th May 1951 and this was followed by a further 415 B.Mk.2s.
The badge was adopted by the squadron during the German's retreat in 1918.
The squadron moved to RAF Cottesmore in April 1969 and operated Canberra B.2s and E.15s in this role until it disbanded in February 1976.

In 1945, Cottesmore was handed back to the RAF and resumed it's training tasks.
Now after defending England against a German attack, Cottesmore was about to become a base that trained not only British Tornado pilots, but German and Italian too.
The Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment, or the TTTE was formed and the first two RAF Tornado aircraft were delivered to Cottesmore on the 1st July 1980.

Harrier engineering work, currently carried out at DARA, RAF St. Athan, will not commence at RAF Cottesmore until November 2004.
The Harrier servicing backlog has reduced since the high activity levels of Operation Telic but has risen this month, largely due to the need to undertake preparatory work at RAF Cottesmore in readiness for the relocation of engineering work from St. Athan.
