Fairford is a major military airbase and was used extensively during both the Gulf wars and the Kosovo crisis.
Talking of aircraft moving to Fairford while their home runways are being resurfaced reminds me of when I saw Concorde for the first time - or rather a part of it - at the south east Gloucestershire.
A squadron of Vulcan bombers were using Fairford while their usual base in East Anglia was being resurfaced and they all - bar one - took off one after another as we watched.

The approach to Fairford would not be easy for the crew as in recent years launches have tended to occur when its dark in the UK.
The runway requirements for an aborted landing are estimated to be around 9000 feet but this assumes the normal braking systems still function and there are reasonable winds in a favourable direction.
With Fairford's runway at 10,000 feet the shuttle would need to touchdown in the runway overrun to have any chance of stopping on tarmac rather than in the grass and with an approach speed of 250+ knots they'd have to hope their brakes and braking chute were still in perfect condition.

In 2003 the two airlines using Concorde (British Airways and Air France) and the company supplying spares and support (Airbus) made the decision to cease flying the aircraft and to retire them to locations (mostly museums) around the world.

Anti-war protesters are to claim thousands of pounds in damages after a high court ruling yesterday that the Gloucestershire police unlawfully detained them on their way to a demonstration at RAF Fairford.
Three coaches on their way to the RAF station, which was being used by American B-52 bombers, were stopped and searched in a lay-by at Lechlade last March before being forced back on to the motorway under a police escort.
The ruling that they were unlawfully held on the two-and-a-half hour return journey, without a toilet break, was welcomed by the protesters and their lawyers as a "landmark victory" for liberty and human rights.

In earlier correspondence with the councillors he explained the reasons for the relocation of Brize Norton aircraft, and confirmed that the use of Fairford would be temporary.
However, because of the operational commitments, he said it was inevitable that some noise would encroach into the local communities, occasionally during the quiet hours.
