 The Berlin Airlift
At this time the RAF Dakota force in Germany was comprised of elements of seven squadrons, which were further augmented by another twelve Dakotas crews from Commonwealth Air Forces squadrons.
RAF Transport Command found itself with a major problem in August, as the ‘Plainfair’ operations had skeletonized the availability of aircrew and aircraft on other routes.
RAF Squadrons would eventually have a rotation of three months engaged in airlift operations followed by two months in the United Kingdom for a rest.

RAF Gatow is located on the fringe of Berlin bounded on one side by the then Eastern Zone of Germany occupied by Russian troops and, in 1946, the airfield did not have a concrete runway - that came later.
Within the RAF Station there were a number of recreational facilities including a NAAFI canteen and a cinema and, within walking distance from the main gate, a sailing and boating club run by the RAF, a “Blue Beret” club for RAF Regiment airmen and two German bars frequented by servicemen of all nationalities.
The RAF’s contribution was to be a fifty strong team swinging clubs with lights at the end of the clubs and I had the job of training them because first, I had attended the army PFOs course and secondly, I was stationed in Berlin.

One of the Hastings aircraft, TG502, became the gate guardian at RAF Gatow, before being airlifted by Ukranian Mi-26 helicopter to its current home at the Allied Museum on Clay Allee in what was the American sector of Berlin.
Of course, the RAF was a bit short handed to begin with, the demob was in full swing from the end of the war, and a lot of people had already left the service.

 Varsity
With the financial aid of the BERLIN AIRLIFT GRATITUDE FOUNDATION and the assistance of Group Captain Chris J. Morris OBE FRIN RAF, Air Attaché at the British Embassy Berlin (a former Varsity Pilot) the Varsity was moved from RAF Gatow to its new location at the east end of Berlin's Tegel Airport.
RAF Gatow was originally a German Luftwaffe training base (date est 1936).
In 1994, four years after the German reunification, RAF Gatow was officially handed over to the German Luftwaffe and became known as the General Steinhoff Kaserne, named after Genral Steinhoff, one of the first Pilots of the reformed Luftwaffe of 1955.

The RAF received 735 Chipmunks manufactured in the UK.
They were still in service for ATC Air Experience Flights until 1996 when they were replaced by the Bulldog (itself replaced by the Grob Tutor in 1999-2000).
The last Chipmunks in military service are operated by Royal historic flights - the RAF Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight, to keep its pilots current on tailwheel aircraft, the Royal Navy and Army historic flights for flying displays in the UK.

 Handley Page Hastings
She finished her RAF service career as a Mark T5 with Strike Command Bombing School (aka 1066 Squadron) at RAF Lindholme where she was flown to RAF Gatow, Germany by Squadron Leader Jackson.
Based at RAF Dishforth 1954/5 she "belly flopped" at then RAF Middleton St George, now Teeside Airport.(recalled are the appalling weather conditions of that period of winter).
This was the RAF’s last crash during the Berlin Airlift and occurred on take off from Tegel Airport (French Sector) on 16th July 1949, it is thought there may have been incorrect tail trim on take off (or, I have heard an engine failure) resulting in the deaths of five RAF personnel.

The RAF Linguists’ Association itself had no formal inauguration but started when, in 1997, two former linguists who attended the closure ceremony at RAF North Luffenham rekindled a 35-year friendship and invited former friends and colleagues to join them for an extended weekend in October, 1998.
Articles recalling experiences of members during their RAF days and stories by those who have something of note to write about make interesting reading and, judging by the number of compliments and good wishes received, Association Members eagerly await their next issue of the Newsletter.
This historic aircraft flew in the Berlin Airlift and was, for many years, displayed at the entrance to RAF Gatow where many linguists once served.

Neil and Bryon met up again after 34 years in 1996 when they learned that the closure of RAF North Luffenham was to be marked by a special ceremony and they decided to attend in the hope of meeting former colleagues.
That evening, during dinner at a local hostelry it was suggested that, between them, they would contact the few for whom they had addresses with a view to discovering the whereabouts of others and to organising a get-together.
The Luftwaffe Commandant of the Julius Steinhoff Kaserne (The RAF Gatow that was from 1945 to 1994), Oberst iG Helmut Becker welcomed the RAF with open arms and put the full facilities of the camp at the disposal of the Association.

I was posted to RAF Church Fenton and when 72 Sqdn moved to RAF Leconfield in 1959 I went with them, later moving to the Station Flight.
Sqdn, whilst the runway was repaired we operated from RAF Bruggen, I also had a short detachment to RAF Gatow in West Berlin.
In 1968 I was posted to 71 M.U. based at RAF Bicester but was permanently attached to RAF Abingdon working mostly at RAF Benson until the Unit - 71 M.U.(M.M.F.) was disbanded in 1970.
