Greenham then came under the charge of the 7551st Combat Support Squadron, serving as the sister site to the huge USAF ordnance storage complex at RAF Welford 14 miles away, until its control passed to the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing at Upper Heyford in May 1970.
The RAF used Greenham for an exercise in Spring 1965 and a Civil Defence exercise (Green Gable) was also held at the base in May 1966 involving 60 volunteers from around Berkshire.
Greenham Common was not a vast distance from the Oxfordshire home of the F-111s and was chosen as the temporary base to host planes, crews, and support staff.

Greenham briefly passed back to the control of RAF groups 92 and 70 and was used for flight training on Airspeed Oxfords of No 15 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit (PAFU) until the end of September 1943 and from May 1943 No 1511 Beam Approach Training Flight from RAF Upwood used the site.
Greenham Common was formally handed back to the RAF on July 1st 1964 In January 1967, Greenham and RAF Sculthorpe in Norfolk were brought back into American use.
RAF Greenham Common was closed for the final time on September 11th 1992, and was handed back to the RAF in a closing ceremony before remaining USAF personnel flew home.

 GREENHAM COMMON TRUST - THE ENVIRONMENT
Following the purchase of the former RAF Greenham Common Airbase in 1997, 750-acres were immediately transferred to the control of the local council to be restored as common land, with financial support from the Trust.
Greenham Common was reopened with unrestricted public access in 2000, providing a natural resource of national importance.
As well as the half a million pounds already donated to West Berkshire Council towards the restoration of the Common, the Trust is also actively working towards a "green" business park, with green transport and commuting and energy efficiency being high on the agenda.

On August 27th 1981 world history was made in Cardiff when 36 women, four babies in pushchairs and six men set off on their march to RAF Greenham Common, Berkshire to protest about the American ground launched cruise nuclear missiles to be deployed there.
Many children were with their mothers on the March to RAF Brawdy in 1982, on the seventeen Star Marches from all parts of the UK to Greenham, and inspired by Greenham there was a Lobby of Parliament by women and children organised by Babies Against the Bomb.
Greenham women later chained themselves to the fence around the base after they were ignored by the press, the media, and the government.

I spent a couple of years at Altus AFB, OK. and was then given orders to RAF Greenham Common/Welford in the United Kingdom.
I flew into RAF Mildenhall and hopped a late night bus to RAF Greenham Common/Welford.
He told us that since Britain had allowed the US to maintain nukes on British soil the peace women had been demonstrating, living outside, at the British bases that had nukes; Greenham Common was one of them.
