The RAF was founded on April 1st, 1918 by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.
The primary role of the RAF in the Cold War years was the defence of Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union.
RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.

The names and insignia of RAF Officers were based on those in use by the Royal Navy - the insignia for equivalent ranks are the same apart from the colour (light blue stripe on a fl background rather than gold) and the absence of the Navy's loop.
The RAF was under the supervision of the Air Ministry and was the world's second independent air force, after the German Luftwaffe, though because the Luftwaffe was disbanded after the end of World War I, the RAF is the oldest airforce in the world.
The end of the RAF presence in the east of Asia came in 1971 when the Far East Air Force was disbanded on October 31.

Halton received its first entry of Boys in January 1922 at which time the rank of Aircraft Apprentice was adopted.
The 3 year Apprenticeship remained the core of RAF technical training, with intakes three times a year to match the end of the school terms; by the mid-1950s with the onset of the Cold War, the Apprenticeship population at Halton numbered some 2500.
The Queen's Colour for No.1 School of Technical Training was presented to a parade of Apprentices at Halton on 25th July 1952 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the presence of Lord Trenchard.

The association between Halton and the Armed Forces began in Autumn 1912, when large scale manouevres were held to exercise the defence of London against attack.
Defending forces from Aldershot were offered help and hospitality from Alfred Rothschild, the owner of Halton House; these forces had three aircraft and an airship as part of their resources.
This was the first link between aviation and the Halton estate - a link which has continued unbroken to this day.

Located North-West of Halton village, South of Aston Clinton which is on the A41 in Buckinghamshire, between Aylesbury and Hemel Hempstead.
Halton was famous for the apprentice school but these days the station is home to the School of Recruit Training and other non-flying units; the station itself is East of Halton while the airfield is to the West.

My time at Halton was, like that of most others, a mixture of the good, the not so good, the bad and indescribable.
I was pounced upon by the said Chiefy who grilled me and on learning that I was one of the ‘new entry’ he promptly informed me to attend at the indoor range next Tuesday evening.
