The Harrier GR5, GR7, GR7A, GR9 and GR9A are all Royal Air Force variants of the BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II.
The Harrier II is an extensively modified version of the first generation Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR Mk.1/Mk.3 series which first flew in December, 1967.
The primary air-to-air missile (AAM) of the Harrier is the AIM-9 Sidewinder using its infrared homing device (the combination of Harrier and Sidewinder proved effective against Argentinian Mirages in the Falklands conflict), but does not carry the medium range AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.

After the formation of the Hawker Siddeley company the aircraft was renamed to Harrier and the RAF ordered 78 Harrier GR1s in 1967, which were delivered from 1969.
To increase the combat capabilities of the Harrier, in 1975 it received a laser sensor in the nose, a RWR (radar warning receiver) in the front edge of the vertical tail plane and a RWR in the fuselage end.

RAF Harrier GR7As, part of Joint Force Harrier based at RAF Cottesmore, are playing a major role in Afghanistan.
The Harriers, deployed in Afghanistan since September 2004, support both the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in rebuilding Afghanistan, and Operation Enduring Freedom in the south of the country.
Although US forces are slowly rebuilding the runway, the Harrier is currently the only fast jet fighter able to operate in the south of the country and the sole asset readily available to support coalition troops on the ground.

Another type of Fast Jet was seen next in the shape of two Jaguar GR3’s from RAF Coltishall XX372 and XZ355 made two standard attack runs on the mock armoured vehicles.

Joint Force Harrier’s squadron structure is to be transformed from 31 March, on the way to its eventual complement of four squadrons of BAE-modified Harrier GR9/9As.
Joint Force Harrier will eventually comprise two RAF and two RN squadrons and have a roughly 50:50 split of pilots from the two services — a balance that will be retained as the UK transitions to future operations of the Joint Strike Fighter.
The future RAF and RN Harrier squadrons will be largely populated by personnel from the respective services, although the navy says a degree of “cross-pollination” will be retained to ensure that the units retain common skills and do not develop different specialities.

Despite rumours to the contrary, the Sea Harrier is still alive and kicking, training continuing regardless of the recent political decision to axe the fleet by 2006.
The MoD stated that the planned withdrawal of the Sea Harrier reflects certain limitations in its capabilities, and the introduction later in the decade of the new Type 45 destroyer which boasts a "very capable area air defence system" (the Type 45 will be equipped with ASTER and is due in service during 2007).
One aspect of the Sea Harrier that will be sorely missed is its air-to-air BVR capability as the GR7/9 does not, and will not, carry a radar of such potency as he FA2's Ferranti "Blue Vixen" track-while-scan, multi-mode, Pulse Doppler unit.
