The Harrier GR5, GR7, GR7A, GR9 and GR9A are all Royal Air Force variants of the BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II.
The Harrier II is an extensively modified version of the first generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR Mk.1/Mk.3 series which first flew in December, 1967.
With the retirement of the Sea Harrier it has been suggested that its Blue Vixen radar could be transferred to the GR9 fleet however the Ministry of Defence has rejected this as risky and too expensive, Defence Minister Adam Ingram estimated the cost would be in excess of £600m.

 Royal Air Force
From May 31 1942 RAF Bomber Command was able to mount large scale night raids involving up to 1000 aircraft, many of which were the new heavy four-engined bombers.
In 1968 the RAF experienced its largest change in administrative structure since 1936 when Fighter Command, Bomber Command and Coastal Command were combined into the new Strike Command which exists today.
The end of the RAF presence in the east of Asia came in 1971 when the Far East Air Force was disbanded on October 31.

The Harrier continues to serve today as the Harrier GR7 and GR9 and AV-8B which are built by BAE SYSTEMS and Boeing (under license).
The Harrier GR Mk.1 was the first production model of the Kestrel, it first flew on December 28, 1967, and entered service with the RAF on April 1, 1969.
The later model Harriers are easily distinguished by their extended wingspan, the wings extending beyond the outrigger wheels that are at the wingtips of the earlier versions (including Kestrel prototypes and the Sea Harrier).

The Sea Harriers and HMS Invincible, commissioned on July 11 1980, received a baptism of fire during the Falklands War of 1982.
The Sea Harriers were to operate in their primary air defence role, with the Harrier GR.3 expected to act as attrition replacements for the Sea Harriers.
However the Sea Harriers claimed 24 kills with no losses in air combat (two were downed by ground anti-aircraft fire) and the RAF fleet was free to operate in their primary ground attack role.

The Harrier II is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft used by the United States Marine Corps, Royal Air Force, Spanish Armada and Italian navy.
Two detachments from RAF Cottesmore were sent to the region, with one known to have been based at the al Jaber airbase in Kuwait, and the other at an undisclosed location.
The Harrier II made an appearance in the Arnold Schwarzenegger spy-action movie True Lies and in the science fiction movie Battlefield Earth starring John Travolta.

The RAF Harrier GR7 is a second generation and design of aircraft, and is a version of the American AV8B.
The current Joint Harrier Force has a total of 113 aircraft; after the migration to the GR9 this is expected to reduce to 71 aircraft.
It would be possible to upgrade the GR9 further so that it had a suitable radar to operate in the fighter role, but this would cost more money than the MOD are prepared to pay when they are expecting the Joint Strike Fighter to provide all their needed capabilities from 2012 onwards.
