The Harrier GR5, GR7, GR7A, GR9 and GR9A are all Royal Air Force variants of the BAE Systems/Boeing Harrier II.
The Harrier II is an extensively modified version of the first generation Hawker-Siddeley Harrier GR Mk.1/Mk.3 series which first flew in December, 1967.
With the retirement of the Sea Harrier it has been suggested that its Blue Vixen radar could be transferred to the GR9 fleet however the Ministry of Defence has rejected this as risky and too expensive, Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram estimated the cost would be in excess of £600m.

The MoD stated that the planned withdrawal of the Sea Harrier reflects certain limitations in its capabilities, and the introduction later in the decade of the new Type 45 destroyer which boasts a "very capable area air defence system" (the Type 45 will be equipped with ASTER and is due in service during 2007).
The Harrier GR9/9a programme is basically the Harrier GR7 Integrated Weapons Programme (IWP) which brings together a number of discrete weapon-system enhancement projects and forms the crux of bringing the GR9 and T Mk12 aircraft into service.
A GR7 Harrier that has been modified during IWP and that has the Mk107 Pegasus fitted will be designated as the Harrier GR9A.

Despite rumours to the contrary, the Sea Harrier is still alive and kicking, training continuing regardless of the recent political decision to axe the fleet by 2006.
Re-formed on 31 March 1980 with the Sea Harrier FRS1, the squadron saw action in the South Atlantic two years later with HMS Hermes, its pilots being awarded many decorations for their heroic efforts against the Argentine forces.
The FA2 version of the Sea Harrier is a development of the FRS1 which, with a much improved avionics and weapons system, has a greater emphasis on air-to-air combat capability.

All RAF aircraft have a strip along the leading edge painted an off-green, this covers the metal leading edge.
Pylons the RAF a/c have an extra pylon fitted to the outrigger housing for a single AIM-9L sidewinder.
Centre Pylon this is a genuine weapons carrying pylon on RAF machines, and as the RAF aircraft do not have an ammunition tunnel between the gun pods, it is a deeper pylon than fitted to other nations’ a/c.
