RAF Kenley (or Kenley Aerodrome) was the home of the Royal Flying Corps in World War One and the RAF in World War Two.
During World War II RAF Kenley was one of the three main fighter stations, together with Croydon Airport and Biggin Hill, responsible for the air-defence of London.
It was during the crucial days of the Battle of Britain that all three RAF stations came into their own, fighting off the overwhelming might of the German Luftwaffe.

Once at their target, the 12 Junkers Ju88s were to approach Kenley from the east and make a precision dive bombing attack on the hangars and buildings on the south side of Kenley aerodrome.
This new spectacle could be seen from many miles away, and soon Kenley's combat Spitfires and Hurricanes were circling round the monster funnel of dirty smoke as their pilots tried to spot somewhere to land in the crated grass.
As at Kenley, the ground staff released the PAC rockets as the Do17s made their approach and accounted for the destruction of two of them.

Attacks on RAF airfields brought its operations inland and by the end of September 1940 it was claiming 75 Luftwaffe victims.

On August 18, 1940, RAF Kenley was attacked by nine low- flying Dornier Do I 7s, flying in three waves of three and causing much damage and many casualties.
When the RAF Regiment was formed in 1942, he and his unit were incorporated into it.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Bea, who was an inspiration to other RAF wives in times of peace as much as in periods of active service.

Detling was one of the 11 Group satellite airfields used by units on a day-to-day basis as required, often flights or squadrons would detach to such an airfield in the morning and return to their main operating and maintenance base in the evening.
Royal Navy fighters were permanently based there, and occasionally RAF units were detached, using the airfield in the same way as a satellite or relief landing ground.

The old 'RAF Station Kenley' is on the North Downs just south of Croydon and was together with Biggin Hill part of a ring of 'sector centres' used by the RAF to defended London and central England during 'The Battle of Britain'.
In 1943 it became the base of the RCAF Canadian 'Kenley Wing' flying Spitfire Mk Vs. Today suburban housing is closing in on all sides of the old airbase.
In August 2000 a monument was erected on the north-west side of the field to commemorate the vital role RAF Kenley played in the war.

Deciding the whereabouts of the aircraft under such circumstances made life difficult in the Operations Room and led to much inspired guesswork by the duty crew.
To make possible an earlier response to German activity, a Kenley Sector squadron was regularly sent down to Hawkinge aerodrome, perched on high ground at the back of Folkestone on the Kent coast.
Although not in the home Sector, its forward position was considered to be of sufficient tactical importance to warrant the move.

In 1929, he was selected as a member of the RAF High Speed Flight which was tasked with flying Britain's entries in the Schneider Trophy Air Races.
On his return to the UK, he assumed command of RAF Drem in Scotland, where he continued development of his night landing light system, eventually adopted by the RAF and known as the 'Drem' system.
At Kenley he often flew with the Wing but after protests from the squadron commanders that he could not see the enemy quick enough and when asked by the AOC in C to stop flying with the Wing he readily agreed.

One of the key actions on this day was the combined attack on the RAF stations at Kenley and Biggin Hill South of London which took place at lunchtime.
The RAF would be helped by a 90mph wind from the North West at 18-20k which meant that by the time the bombers reached London few escorting fighters would have the fuel to help the bombers.

The former RAF houses in Gauntlet Crescent are being demolished to make way for new houses.
So the RAF must have sold off many of the buildings and some of the land around the aerodrome.
My uncle was born on Whtyleave Hill and is now 82 and remembers going on the aerodrome to collect bullets from the planes when they were test firing their guns to calibrate them about 1930, they were chased off by the Mlitary police.

A blast pen was a specially-constructed E-shaped double bay at British World War 2 fighter stations, being either 150feet or 190feet wide and 80feet front-to-back, accommodating aircraft for safe-keeping against bomb blasts and splinters during enemy air-attacks.
The longer spine section behind the parking areas usually encloses a narrow corridor for aircrew and servicing personnel to use as an air raid shelters.
Examples may still be seen at the present Kenley Aerodrome and at North Weald aerodrome in Essex close to "The Squadron" bar, some pens have had their second bay removed over the years, thus becoming U-shaped.

On 1st December 1945, it moved to Gravesend, from where in June 1946 it went to RAF Detling on the North Downs and then to RAF West Malling for the period between September 1949 and September 1950.
Following the U.S. Naval Facility withdrawal from RAF West Malling in late 1963, the airfield was placed on a care and maintenance status.
He and some of the staff joined 615 VGS at Kenley and were able to run courses at other airfields.
