RAF Leuchars is the most northerly air defence station in the United Kingdom.
It is located in Leuchars, Fife, on the east coast of Scotland, near to the university town of St Andrews.
Leuchars is also the base for No. 612 (County of Aberdeen) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, an RAF Mountain Rescue Unit, and is the airfield from which the local Air Training Corps units and officer cadets from Aberdeen, Dundee and St. Andrews University Air Squadrons fly from, using the Tutor T1.

In 1848 Leuchars became the temporary terminus of the Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee Railway as it progressed north from Cupar.
Leuchars became a junction station when the line to St Andrews was built in 1852, and in 1878 the line to the Tay Rail Bridge and Dundee was built from Leuchars.
Leuchars itself continues to be well served by trains, being on the main line from Edinburgh to Dundee and Aberdeen with direct services to all those cities as well as to London.

The primary role of the RAF in the Cold War years was the defence of Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union.
RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.
The Tornado F.3 is the RAF's air defence fighter aircraft, based at RAF Leuchars and RAF Leeming to defend the UK’s airspace.

Preparations for the arrival of the first RAF Typhoons in 2004 meant that No 56 (Reserve) Squadron, the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with its Tornado F3s moved north to Leuchars whilst the Tornado F3 Operational Evaluation Unit moved to nearby RAF Waddington.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on May 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

In November the Squadron again relocated to RAF Gibraltar for support of Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa.
In 1974 the squadron re-equipped with the Phantom at RAF Coningsby, before moving north to Leuchars on November 3 1975.
Throughout its time at Leuchars the No 111(F) Squadron has been tasked with the maintenance of Quick Reaction Alert, which involves keeping aircraft at a high state of readiness to intercept, identify and, should it be necessary, destroy hostile aircraft approaching UK airspace.

Leuchars is among the busiest stations in RAF Strike Command with their aircraft forming part of an advanced air defence system.
Flypasts of the Eurofighter Typhoon with the Spitfire, RAF Harrier GR7 with the Hawker Hurricane and the Hercules with the Dakota were organised.
Leuchars always seems to be the only major airshow other than RIAT that manages to attract strong participation from the US Armed Services and this year was no different with several types present.

LEUCHARS Airshow manager Martin Barnett (pictured) put down the phone, eased back in his chair and took a sip from the steaming coffee he was about to enjoy before being interrupted by the call, writes Michael Alexander.
Martin joined the RAF direct from school in 1963 and two years later was flying as a navigator on Canberra BI 8s in Germany followed by a tour on Vulcans with 617 Squadron at RAF Scampton.
In those days the Leuchars Airshow was one of four ‘‘At Home Day’’ airshows held in mid-September to commemorate the Battle of Britain fought during the summer of 1940 when ‘‘The Few’’ in their Spitfires and Hurricanes defeated the might of the Luftwaffe and prevented a Nazi invasion of Britain.

Leuchars, like Waddington is an RAF show which means the majority of its participants come from the RAF and it was no different this year.
But of course Leuchars is an RAF airshow and as such the main attractions of the flying display came from the RAF.

The morning of Saturday 29th May 2004 brought 25 members of RAF Leuchars Nomads Rugby Club together in the station rugby bar, ready to embark on what was expected to be an extremely challenging Southern Hemisphere tour of New Zealand and Fiji.
After a pleasant morning spent clay pigeon shooting, Leuchars were scheduled to play the Glenmark 2nd XV that conveniently fielded 3 ex-Crusaders players, now coming to the end of their rugby playing days (fortunately Todd was back at home, currently employed as part of the Scottish coaching staff).
Leuchars were still bursting with well-founded confidence after our excellent victory in Queenstown and went into the game in a very positive manner.

Squadrons and personnel at Leuchars are set to remain intact with the Fife base on target to become the second of the UK’s two main fighter bases, equipped with the RAF’s newest jet fighter, the Eurofighter Typhoon, from 2008.
It was confirmed yesterday that Leuchars has been chosen as the country’s second Eurofighter base ahead of RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire because Leuchars, and the main Eurofighter base at Coningsby, are already established as quick reaction alert interceptor bases, and their relative locations provide optimum geographic coverage in defence of the UK.
He said as far as Leuchars was aware, the Eurofighter was still on track to replace the F3 Tornado and be in service at Leuchars from 2008 and the base should end up with three squadrons, possibly phased in completely by 2015.

Sixty years on from the end of the Second World War, the Royal Air Force Airshow at RAF Leuchars in Fife on Saturday, 10th September will be the Ministry of Defence's largest VE- and VJ-Day commemoration in Scotland with an expected attendance of 40,000.

That assurance was given by an RAF Leuchars spokesman last night as a wheelchair-bound peace campaigner, who caused damage at the base during a protest last year, told how "amazingly and scarily easy" it had been for her to break into the Fife base and remain undiscovered for around two hours.
She further denied that within RAF Leuchars she maliciously damaged three buildings and three vehicles by spray- painting slogans on them.
She was also aware, she said, that Leuchars Tornados had been involved in patrolling the Iraqi southern no-fly zone, and she argued that destruction of Iraqi infrastructure during that period, and the imposition of trade sanctions, would make the impact of war even greater on ordinary Iraqi people.

Members of RAF Halton Pipes and Drums joined pipers and drummers from RAF Leuchars to play for the RAF Pipes and Drums on the Isle of Man. On 16th July at historic Tynwald Hill, St Johns, the bands performed to mark the 60th anniversary of Victory celebrations on the island.
Members of RAF Halton took part in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2004, and some were asked to do it all over again in Australia.

She joined a demonstration at RAF Leuchars March, 8 and shortly before the outbreak of the war Røder enters the base and disarms a British Tornado Jet to prevent further crimes against humanity to be committed against the Iraqi people.

43 Squadron was re-formed at RAF Leuchars, Fife on 1 September 1969 operating the former Naval version of the Phantom FG Mk1.
The squadron re-equipped with the Tornado F.3 during 1989 and remains at RAF Leuchars in the Air Defence role.

Big-hearted fund-raisers from the Allied Irish Bank took on a team from the RAF Leuchars charity action group, each pulling a Tornado jet for a distance of 100 yards.
On Saturday the team was hosted by the RAF Leuchars Regiment Flight for a day of drill, weapons, leadership training and team building.
Flight Lieutenant Pete Brambley of the RAF Leuchars charity action group explained the group’s prime aim was to raise money for charities in Tayside and Fife, with them raising £50,000 last year alone.
