It is the RAF's busiest fast jet base with 77 fast jets based there.

Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on Ma 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

It currently operates the Tornado GR4 from RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland.
The squadron was formed at RAF Scampton during World War II on the March 15, 1943 with the purpose of attacking three major dams on the Ruhr in Germany: the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe.
When the Squadron was reformed with the Tornado it was originally based at RAF Marham, but is now located at RAF Lossiemouth.

RAF Lossiemouth is located on the South-Western edge of the seaside town of Lossiemouth, about 5 miles North of Elgin, about 40 miles North-North-East of Inverness, in the Grampian region of Scotland.
Lossie is normally very quiet at weekends with based aircraft tucked away in hardened aircraft shelters, but occasionally a pair of Tornados may be seen at weekends, and visiting aircraft may be left parked out in front of the large hangars by the control tower.
Lossiemouth can often be very quiet on Fridays, especially after lunch - when many of the based aircraft are being hangared for the weekend.

A fishing port and resort town in the Moray parish of Drainie, situated on the Moray Firth at the mouth of the River Lossie, 6 miles (9½ km) north of Elgin.
It incorporates the communities of Old Lossiemouth, a fishing village which was laid out by the merchants of Elgin in 1764, the fishing village of Stotfield and a new section, Branderburgh, which was laid out on a clifftop to a design by George MacWilliam c.1830 and named after Colonel Brander of Pitgaveny.
The original port, which was moved from Spynie to its present position in 1698 after the mouth of Spynie Loch had become closed with shingle, owed its early growth to its role as Elgin's seaport but later, with the coming of the railway, developed as a marine resort.

Lossiemouth became HMS Fulmar of the Royal Navy at the end of the Second World War until the RAF took over the Station again in 1972.
This role is continued today as Lossiemouth is now home to Nos 12 and 617 Squadrons, both equipped with 13 Tornado GR1Bs, the version of the Tornado capable of carrying the Sea Eagle anti-shipping missile.

In the cavernous hall of the new RAF Regiment Flight at RAF Lossiemouth (it really is big, but once the stud walls are in it will be two lecture rooms and a corridor) they gathered with a certain amount of intrigue, but probably a little more trepidation.
One end of the hall had been set up as a lecture room, the other with three 6'x6' wargames tables and an area for the umpires.
