  RAF LYNHEHAM VIEWING GUIDE
RAF Lyneham is the Home of the Hercules, located on the Western edge of Lyneham village just South of the M4 between junctions 16 and 17, about 11 miles South/South-West of Swindon and 8 miles North-East of Chippenham in Wiltshire.
Lyneham is a 24 hour, 365 day a year emergency airfield so is technically always open; in practice though you're not likely to see anything moving in the evenings.
Unfortunately in deference to the local population's sensitive ears, RAF Lyneham has a number of earth banks surrounding anywhere where sustained engine noise can come from, and this end of the runway is one of those spots.

RAF Rudloe Manor just off the Corsham to Box road (A4) finally closed in 2001 There is a report on its current state here and a photo here.
RAF Hullavington on the Chippenham to Malmesbury road (A429) is still in use albeit by the army, Buckley Barracks (named after Ordnance Corps Hero John Buckley VC) is home to 9 Supply Regiment RLC.
The RAF left in 1976 and the base became "Azimghur Barracks" when it was taken over by the Army in 1978 for The Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Corps of Transport.

Although the RAF Movements School at Kidbrooke was in operation, it seemed that new recruits to Air Movements were first sent direct to a station for "hands on" training.
This was followed by LAC (Leading Aircraftman) and at the end of my first year at Lyneham I had made it to SAC (Senior Aircraftman) Ray Taylor, who was Cpl in the section on my arrival was a National Serviceman and came from Spennymoor in Co. Durham.
Although there was a pub in Lyneham village, it wasn't thought to be far enough away from the camp for us young lads to feel comfortable.

Before RAF Lyneham was built, the area was an agricultural one, with several farms, some of them owned by the Methuen family from Corsham Court, some 10 miles to the south west.
When RAF Lyneham opened, however, these had not been started, and the landing ground was on the site of the present aircraft parking area and sports field, and one of the quarters sites.
The WAAF accommodation and Mess Hall were in Lyneham village, to the east of the main camp, where Pound Close and St Michael's Court now stand.

THE FUTURE of RAF Lyneham has been given a glimmer of hope after it was revealed the base is being considered as a helicopter superbase.

The remains of the first Australian serviceman killed in Iraq were returned to Britain today in a sombre ceremony at RAF Lyneham where his coffin was met by his widow.
His coffin arrived at RAF Lyneham in southwest England covered by the Union Jack, with an Australian flag hanging in the dignitaries' marquee where his wife Kellie Merritt, Princess Anne and British defence secretary Geoff Hoon greeted their return.
In a 90 minute repatriation ceremony on the tarmac, the 10 coffins were individually carried from the C-17 by six RAF pall bearers to waiting hearses.
