RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, about 50 miles west of London, England, United Kingdom, is the largest airbase of the Royal Air Force.
It is home to the RAF's heavy transport aircraft, the C-17 Globemaster III, and its Tristar and Vickers VC10 tankers.
By 1950 the USAF Strategic Air Command was based at RAF Lakenheath, RAF Marham and RAF Sculthorpe.

As of 1 April 2003, total RAF personnel numbered 52,804, of which 1,145 were aircrew and a further 170 were aircrew under training.
For the 2003 war with Iraq, the RAF deployment under the US-led coalition was the largest since the 1990/91 Gulf War.
RAF Tristar and VC-10 tanker aircraft were deployed, and a capability has been retained in theatre to support the continuing operations in the area.

Four months later No. 9 Sqn was reformed as the first RAF Tornado squadron at Honington, and in 1986 moved RAF Brüggen in Germany in 1990 the Squadron deployed to Dhahran in Saudi Arabia for operations in the Gulf War.
Her return to RAF Marham is the penultimate chapter in the RAF's last overseas Main Operating Base, as RAF Brüggen finally ceases to be an active airfield later this year when No 31 Sqn is the last RAF flying unit to leave Germany in August 2001.
RAF Brüggen will be handed over to the British Army at the end of March 2002.

 EDP24 Frontline - the gateway to East Anglia's Armed Forces
The position is similar in the south, with the Tornado aircraft from RAF Marham which have recently moved in to patrol the southern no-fly zones to protect the Marsh Arabs.
There are currently four squadrons of Tornados at RAF Marham – 31 Squadron is currently involved in the no-fly patrols with II (ac), IX (b) and XIII scheduled to rotate into the region over the coming months.
Pilots from 6, 41 and 54 squadrons at RAF Coltishall are involved in the northern patrols.

The five front-running RAF bases to be one of two homes for the RAF's new Joint Combat Aircraft (JCA) are RAF Leeming, RAF Cottesmore, RAF Marham, RAF Lossiemouth and RAF St Mawgan.
The first phase of the basing study has concluded that RAF Leeming, which had not previously been considered, may be a suitable option and it will therefore be considered along with the other bases in the second phase of work which will report later in the year.
The first phase has also concluded that RAF Kinloss, RAF Wittering and RNAS Yeovilton are less likely to be future JCA bases; primarily because of environmental issues at Wittering and Kinloss and the length of the runways at Yeovilton and Kinloss.

The RAF Marham option for the RAFAT was subsequently foreclosed after it was earmarked for Tornado squadrons withdrawing from Germany.
A decision was taken in 1998 that RAF Scampton would have to be retained in some capacity to support RAFAT practice and it is recognised that RAF Cranwell has never been ideally suited to the needs of the Team.

First deliveries to the RAF of the original GR1 version were made in 1980 where it replaced a number of older RAF aircraft including the Buccaneer and Vulcan as low-level attack aircraft.

Preparations for the arrival of the first RAF Typhoons in 2004 meant that No 56 (Reserve) Squadron, the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with its Tornado F3s moved north to Leuchars whilst the Tornado F3 Operational Evaluation Unit moved to nearby RAF Waddington.
Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on Ma 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

RAF Marham is located South-East of Marham village, about 9 miles South-East of Kings Lynn and 6 miles West of Swaffham in Norfolk.
Marham is the RAF's reconnaisance centre, home to the RAF's last operational Canberras and four Tornado squadrons.
RAF Lakenheath is only 20 miles away to the South; about a 30-40 minute drive - take the A1122 back to the A47, off onto the A1065 and through Swaffham and then just stay on the A1065.

Two British airmen based at RAF Marham are officially listed as missing after their Tornado jet was shot down by a US Patriot missile in a dreadful "friendly fire" incident as they returned from a bombing mission over Iraq.
The two highly experienced Tornado crewmen had not been named or their ranks and squadron released, but senior officers in Kuwait have confirmed they were based at RAF Marham.
Yesterday the mood at the base in the Kuwaiti desert, home to 80 Tornado crews, from the four Marham squadrons, along with 617 squadron from RAF Lossiemouth, was sombre.

In November 1969, after 25 years of RAF service, WJ874 was transferred to the charge of the Royal Navy's Fleet Requirements Unit to train the TT.18 (Target Tug) pilots in the art of Canberra flying.
Put into open store at RAF Wyton in February 1988, this T.4 languished for a few years until it was re-activated and issued to the charge of the newly formed 1 PRU.
It moved to RAF Marham when 1 PRU was re-designated as 39 Sqn and is currently active.

One of Wales' main military bases, RAF St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan, is facing closure, the UK government has warned.
Most of the job losses announced in March were because of a decision to upgrade Harrier jump-jets "in-house" by the RAF at its base at Cottesmore in Leicestershire, instead of St Athan.
The work is being moved to RAF Marham in Norfolk.
