The RAF has leased 4 C-17 Globemaster IIIs from Boeing to provide a strategic heavy airlift capability; it was announced in 2004 that these will be purchased, together with a further example, once the lease expires.

Some nice shots of an RAF EH-101 Merlin HC3 carrying the Red Arrows pilots during their 40th Anniversary display season.
It was good to see an RAF Nimrod once again being displayed well with XV244 having been based temporarily at Gatwick for its show participation.
He also informed me that this particular Puma (XW223) is the only RAF example fitted with these larger sponson tanks that makes this even rarer in public than the rest of the Puma fleet.

An added bonus on both days was a 'thunder run' by Vulcan XL426, the sound of Olympus engines briefly howling across the Essex countryside as she enjoyed her return to life.

One must give credit to the RAF in its support of the show, as without it very little else would have appeared; with the previously mentioned displays, a Tucano T1, the Red Arrows, BBMF and Falcons completed the lineup, the BBMF also operating from the airport.

More than that, a recent Ministry of Defence trial has shown that it can be carried comfortably in the cabin of the RAF Merlin HC 3 helicopter, an aircraft regularly deployed by British armed forces for airlift and battlefield support.
The trial took place at 28 Squadron RAF Benson using a Hilux Double Cab EX provided by the Inchcape Oxford Toyota centre, located in nearby Kidlington.
In keeping with the squadron motto "Whatsoever you can do, do", it took just half an hour to demonstrate that the Hilux could be driven up and down the helicopter’s load ramp in and out of the cabin without the need for any structural changes to the aircraft.
