However, the list excludes squadrons which were later transferred to the Army Air Corps or the Fleet Air Arm.
Squadrons with Roman numerals instead of Arabic numerals are identified in that fashion traditionally.

No 120 moved to Iceland in April 1943, operating from Meeks Field (later renamed Keflavik), and within six weeks of the move, a further four U-boats had been sunk.
In March 1944, the Squadron returned to Northern Ireland and joined Coastal Command's massive anti-submarine efforts in support of Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings, and by the end of the war, No 120 was the RAF's highest scoring anti-submarine unit with 14 kills.
Despite this record, the Squadron was disbanded on 4 June 1945 and not reformed again October 1946 when No 160 Squadron at Leuchars was renumbered.

The RAF were close to defeat but Adolf Hitler then changed his tactics and ordered the Luftwaffe to switch its attack from British airfields, factories and docks to civilian targets.
As things are at present, the gunners have no real confidence in their ability to use this equipment efficiently in war, and captains and crews have, I fear, little confidence in the ability of the gunners to defend them against destruction by enemy aircraft.
When I arrived at the Squadron it was a matter of considerable pride if a crew brought home a photo showing the target area at all, but it soon became a matter of considerable disgrace if one failed to obtain a photo of the aiming point itself.

The squadron maintained it's role as a target marking squadron until the end of the war, moving to Upwood in March 1944 and Wyton in June 1945, where it disbanded on 25 September 1945.
One of No 158's Halifax IIIs, LV907 named 'Friday the 13th' ended the war having completed 128 operational missions and after the war was displayed in London, but unfortunately only the nose panel with its distinctive nose art and mission marking was saved and is now housed in the RAF Museum at Hendon.
Finally in September the No 159 element continued on to India and the element left in the Middle East adopted the identity of No 160 Squadron.

It is with regret that we have to advise of the deaths of Brian Wheldon from Sheringham and Peter Gay from Brentwood.
Apparently 160 Sqdn was one of the units specified.
At 160 there were a number of Canadian mechanics from 240 Squadron and others I had known on the McGill course.

 Liberator III/G.R.V for RAF
Liberator IIIs and Liberator IIIAs served with Nos 59, 86, 120, 160, 224, 354, and 357 Squadrons of RAF Coastal Command and with Nos 159, 178, and 355 Squadrons of RAF Bomber Command.
Nos 59, 86, 120, and 224 Squadrons served in the North Atlantic campaign against U-boats, during which they turned out to be outstandingly successful and are credited with at least nine U-boat kills between October of 1942 and October of 1943 with their Liberator III and IIIA aircraft.
No 357 Squadron of Coastal Command served in India, their primary mission being the dropping Nos 159 and 355 Squadrons of Bomber Command flew in the CBI theatre, whereas 178 was stationed in the Middle East and flew missions against targets in North Africa, Sicily, Crete, the Aegean Islands, the Balkans, Italy, and southern Germany.

Luckily, after the RAF had originally given it to the Royal Indian Air Force in 1948, it had been used and flown on coastal command operations by the now I.A.F. either to watch for Pakistanis or to chase gold-smuggling dhows sailing down from the Persian Gulf.
The new RAF roundels were still a little tacky and the "from I.A.F. to R.A.F. museum" plague was firmly riveted on.
No ceremony would have been complete without the coconut and the flowers, and this was duly done.

Three Hercules flown by crews from Lyneham--based 47 and 70 Squadrons dropped members of 2 Squadron RAF Regiment in to Sierra Leone heralding a two-week exercise in live-firing and jungle warfare.
A new RAF Regiment field squadron was formed at Lossiemouth on May 8 with a high readiness state for short notice overseas deployments.
No 51 Squadron RAF Regiment will be commanded by Sqn Ldr David Devoy and when fully formed will have around 160 personnel on its strength.

160 Squadron was reformed at Thurleigh as a Liberator heavy bomber unit for the Middle East.

Formed at from a detachment of No 160 Squadron Shandur on 15 January 1943, it was equipped with Liberators and began bombing operations immediately.
However, on 30 September the squadron was disbanded and its aircraft transferred to No 210 Squadron.
Shortly after resuming operations, the squadron, as part of No 2 Group, was transferred to 2nd Tactical Air Force and together with No's 98 and 320 Squadrons it formed No 139 Airfield (later No 139 Wing).

The modified aircraft was the 652A, easily recognizable because it had large square windows instead of smaller oval ones, and was fitted with a dorsal gun turret.
In 1936 the type entered service with No.48 Squadron, Coastal Command, as the Anson Mk.I. Until the Hudson replaced it, Coastal Command used the Anson for maritime reconnaissance and search and rescue.
The Anson Mk.I was a low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear, a first for the RAF --- in fact so new that crews all too often forgot to perform the necessary task of turning a crank 160 times to wind down the landing gear.
