RAF Bruggen was named originally after the nearest railhead, in the North Rhein Westphalia village of Bruggen; however, it is actually situated just outside the village of Elmpt some 6km away.
RAF Bruggen is home to the Royal Air Force Tornado Wing in Germany and the Station was constructed on drained marshland within a heavily forested area in the short time of 12 months (July 1952-July 1953).
RAF Bruggen was tasked by NATO to mount offensive air operations against the Former Republic of Yugoslavia on the 28 March 1999.

 II Sqn History
On the 2nd June, in honour of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a parade was held at RAF Jever, which concluded with the Squadron recce cars driving past in formation.
RAF Jever was inspected by Air Commodore H D McGregor AOC No 2 Group who was met by a Guard of Honour mounted by airmen of the Squadron.
It was deployed to Northern Ireland on lst February 1988 as the resident RAF Regiment Squadron, tasked with the operational responsibility of RAF Aldergrove and RAF Bishops Court tactical areas of responsibility.

RAF Nordhorn is a bombing and gunnery range in Germany used by the Royal Air Force and other NATO air forces.
It was transferred back to the German Luftwaffe in March 2001, though the RAF retains a presence.
During the cold war, the daily flights over the town of Nordhorn were a constant reminder to the local townspeople of the ongoing struggle with the Russians that finally ended with the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.

The history of "Schiess und Bomben abwurfplatz" Nordhorn dates back to 1933 when a specific area near the city of Nordhorn, Niedersachsen, Germany was designated as a gunnery range for the German army.
Since that year the range was intensively used by the RAF and the rest of the NATO reaching to a peak during the Cold War years between 1980 and 1990.
Although the Bundeswehr is suffering from large budget cuts in recent years, Nordhorn range is still of importance for its operations resulting in spending some 4,9 million Euro for infrastructure improvements up to 2009.

The Nordhorn range at Klausheide,lies in the extreme west of Germany, just across the border with The Netherlands.It used to be an RAF range, but nowadays its under German command.Also on this range, several NATO countries can practice here with practice ammunition only.

The RAF raided Brunswick on Jan. 14, 1944 with a total of 496 Lancasters and 2 Halifax.
Lancaster II's were lost from 514 squadron LL685 JI-G2 - crashed 800 metres W of Bennebostel, 5 km S of Celle, and LL679 JI-J2 it only states "all are buried in Hannover war cemetery".
Petrol tanks were holed and the order to bale out was given, the Lancaster crashing on the Engdener Wuste, E of Nordhorn.

Derek was employed at RAF Brize Norton as an MOD Civillian driver, after serving 18 years with the RAF.
All the info I have about his time with the RAF is that he worked in MT (I think as a driver) during his national service, and for some of that time he was stationed in Germany.
W.O.Ernest P.Henshall MBE died just recently on the19 July 2003 it was in the RAF news dated 22 Aug 2003 He was one of the best, always a laugh and always looked after his men, I had the pleasure of serving with him at RAF Wattisham.

He claimed his first victory on the night of 12/13 March 1941, when he shot down a RAF Hampden twin-engined bomber near Nordhorn.
By the end of 1942, he had increased his victory total to seven, including three RAF bombers shot down on the night of 21/22 December to record his fifth through seventh victories.

Spitfire PL953 on a high level reconnaissance flight and flown by F/Lt D.C. Wilkins, RAF 101007 suffered an engine failure and was force landed north of Tilburg, province Noord-Brabant, Holland.

My uncle worked in the RAF bar in the 1940ies, later he had a shop in Hauptstrasse and traded with Herr Wilmes who, in those days, was in charge of the food supply for RAF Winterberg.
It’s called “Flugplatz Gutersloh 1937-1987” (copyright 1987 by RAF Gutersloh and proceeds to RAF and Luftwaffe charities) and covers the history of the Station from its building by the Luftwaffe to late NATO exercises.
