RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.

Personnel and Training Command was created on 1 April 1994 as a consequence of the RAF's restructuring programme, embraces all aspects of recruiting, training, career management, welfare, conditions of service, resettlement and pensions for RAF regular and reserve forces worldwide.
Royal Air Force Personnel and Training Command badge comprises of the upper part of an Ionic column, thereupon an eagle, and as base, a scroll and key joined by a chain and adopted the motto 'Ut Aquilae Surgant' ('That Eagles Might Soar').
The scroll and key symbolising the Command's personnel and training elements are culled from the Badge of the old RAF Personnel Management Agency and Training Command respectively.

Over 2000 officers and men were based at Innsworth by the time training began in earnest in 1941, this being delayed due to the arrival of 1500 RAF evacuees from Dunkirk.

The majority of RAF events find some fencers with their camera handy to capture some of the action.
Occasionally, personnel undertaking photographic training at RAF Cosford will use the fencing competition as practice towards their course, and we are all too happy to let them take as many photographs as they wish, as long as we get a copy.

Currently, all University Air Squadrons (UASs) are responsible for a share of the RAF's EFT requirement, training both University students during the course of their degree, and also Direct Entry (DE) student pilots.
The RAF element of JEFTS is to cease to be in July 2003, bringing to an end what will have been a 5 year stay at Church Fenton.
The reason behind the move is that the RAF has identified a large surplus of flying hours at its UASs around the country, so it has decided to move all Direct Entry training to the UASs.
