RAF Scampton is a Royal Air Force airbase, situated near Lincoln in England.
Scampton is also famous as being the home of the Vulcan Bombers during the 1950s and 60s.
Later the RAF Central Flying School moved to Scampton and it was common to see the Red Arrows aerobatic team there as it became their base.

I realise this is disappointing news for RAF Scampton and for Lincolnshire but I have to take the right decisions for defence as a whole and the taxpayer.
Investment in RAF Scampton to date has been directed towards units that are already based there: 2nd Control and Reporting Centre, 1 Air Control Centre, the RAF Aerobatics Team and the Mobile Meteorological Unit.

RAF Scampton (IATA: SQZ, ICAO: EGXP) is a Royal Air Force station situated north of Lincoln in England, near the village of Scampton, on the site of an old World War I landing field.
It was from Scampton that Wing Commander Guy Gibson, in Operation Chastise, led the attack on the dams in the Ruhr Valley.
RAF Scampton is now the home of Control and Reporting Centre Scampton.

RAF Station Hemswell, having started life as a peacetime Station in 1937, quickly settled back into its peacetime role as a permanent part of the local community after the ‘interruption' of WW2.
In 1967, the RAF switched off the lights, closed the gates and the base entered a very unhappy period and its handsome buildings were to be sadly neglected for many years.
In 1995, the RAF Hemswell Memorial was erected on the edge of the old parade ground to commemorate all who served there during its thirty-year life as a Royal Air Force Bomber Command base.

The squadron was retained as a precision bombing unit and moved to RAF Coningsby, and concrete runways were laid at Scampton.

Although there are no facilities at RAF Scampton to view The Red Arrows, a small public viewpoint south of Scampton village by the A1500 often gives an opportunity to watch the team practising over the airfield.

With the expansion of the RAF to meet developments in Germany during the 1930's, the Air Ministry turned first to abandoned First World War landing grounds when looking to build the required new airfields.
The Scampton aerodrome site proved suitable although a larger acreage was required taking in farmland to the south in the parish of Scampton, a village to the west of the B1398.
This was because Scampton was one of the few stations with runways long enough and strong enough to sustain these large aircraft.

Unlike XA901 that was used entirely for trials and XH537 that was used for trials before entering RAF service, XH563 was delivered from the Woodford factory to an RAF squadron.
The recipient was No 83 Squadron at RAF Scampton and the date was 28 December 1960.
Scampton had been chosen to become the home of three Vulcan B2 squadrons armed with the Blue Steel missile.

A Lincolnshire Echo campaign to bring the Red Arrows back to their spiritual home at RAF Scampton is nearing its conclusion.
The Red Arrows have been stationed at RAF Cranwell, some 18 miles south of Lincoln, since 1995 but will return to their old home on December 21, according to an announcement from armed forces minister John Spellar.

On a much more positive note, the new Control and Reporting Centre at RAF Scampton has been completed and initial operations commenced in Jan 06 with AOC 3 Gp marking the event with a formal opening on 26 Jan 06.

RAF Scampton, sometime in 1969 I was close to a Vulcan, as it rotated, it blew an engine (or two?) Departing on the south- westerly runway I think saved the crew.
There was an air cadet on board and, when the crew evacuated he forgot to undo his 'elephant's trunk' and so his parachute opened automatically as he left the aircraft - it didn't seem to slow him down much though.
Scampton is built on an escarpment of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

This page has been written for the benefit of RAF personnel who may be posted to Scampton or Kirton Lindsey and given married quarters in Hemswell Cliff.
Since the closure of the RAF station most of the 'Other Ranks' married quarters have been used as housing for the Army from Rapier Barracks, Kirton in Lindsey.
Most people in the village welcome the return of the RAF because it means that the village school will be able to keep some excellent teachers and the community centre may stay open.
