The Prince of Wales visited the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire today to help celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary and meet military students and instructors from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.
The Prince, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps and Air Chief Marshal of the Royal Air Force, was dressed in a traditional green Army Air Corps uniform complete with a blue beret for his visit to the school.
The Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS), located at RAF Shawbury, is an independent unit within the station whose task is to provide helicopter training British military personnel and some overseas countries.

Formed 15 Oct 1941 at RAF Valley as an Air-Sea Rescue unit with Walrus and Lysander fixed wing aircraft, it was disbanded at Harrowbeer, north of Plymouth on 15 Feb 1945.

In early 1963 it was part of 2FTS, RAF Syerston as '7', and by the end of the year it was based at RAF Linton-on-Ouse with 1FTS, carrying the code '12'.
XM357 then returned to RAF Leeming for a second spell with 3FTS in early 1964 as '16' and remained in service until June 1968 when it was flown to 27MU at RAF Shawbury for storage.
RAF St Athan is and remains today the RAF's main aircraft maintenance base.
