 RSG: Sites: Spadeadam
Spadeadam was opened in the late 1950s as a test area for the British Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM).
RAF Spadeadam is the only Electronic Warfare Tactics Range (EWTR) in the UK, and the only one of two such facilities in Europe.
RAF Spadadam's main gate is situated two miles north of Gilsland Village on the Cumbria/Northumberland border, there are no signs pointing to it and although there are standard MOD signs at the start of the access road visitors do not know which base the are approaching until they reach the guardhouse.

With the airshow season coming to an end, I was still in need of a fix of fast jet action and having seen the weather forecast was going to be good and the promise of quite a few frontliners I decided to go to RAF Spadeadam and watch the day’s proceedings.
These turned out to be Cobra 1+2 from 13sq at RAF Marham that were transiting through the range at 5000ft.
First up was COT 61 who made several dry runs on various simulated targets on the range from straight and level flight to ‘pop up’ attacks which involved staying low and then climbing up sharply to get visual on the target and then diving in to the attack.

 RAF Spadeadam - RAF Spadeadam
RAF Spadeadam is the only facility in Europe where aircrews can practise manoeuvres and tactics against a variety of threats and targets that they face in contemporary warfare.
This fascinating facility attracts aircraft from the RAF, Army, Navy and NATO Forces.
The survival of aircrews over Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere, and the soldiers on the ground who depend on air support are affected by the training provided by RAF Spadeadam.

As I confirmed when we spoke on the telephone on 22 November, this first stage is now complete, and as a result I have written to the DTI in order to officially lodge a holding objection on behalf of MOD to the granting of planning permission for construction and operation of the proposed windfarm.
You may wish to know that RAF Spadeadam is run and financed jointly by the RAF and the United States Air Force and is the only Electronic Warfare tactics training facility of its kind in Europe.
In short the facility at RAF Spadeadam is unique in the United Kingdom and vital to essential training, particularly the work-up period for crews prior to an operational deployment (such as in the Gulf or Bosnia to cite the most recent examples).

 RAF Spadeadam - Umberland
I was tasked to develop a 'Red Force' or 'Opposition Force' by the Air Officer Commanding 1 Group, Air Vice Marshall David Walker, in order to challenge the RAF and its allies in contemporary air warfare.
My intent was to form a ‘Red Force’ that was to become the RAF's most dangerous enemy and for RAF Spadeadam to create ‘the fog of war' by employing tactics and techniques across the electromagnetic spectrum.
The Umberland order of battle comprises the equipment on the ground at Spadeadam and the Umberland Air Force: fighters from No 100 Sqn at RAF Leeming and Electronic Counter Measure aircraft from Flight Refuelling Aviation at Teesside.

 RAF Spadeadam
RAF Spadeadam is home to the Electronic Warfare Tactics Range and offers a unique facility for the training of aircrews in a hostile Electronic Warfare environment.
The 9000-acre site now occupied by the Range used to be known as the Spadeadam Wastes, mostly remote and uninhabited, until 1957 when the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Test Centre was built.
The Range provides realistic Electronic Warfare training for aircrew, primarily for the RAF, but other NATO Air Forces use the range as well.
