RAF Wittering will be unique among front line stations as its role expands to become the new home for the RAF's expeditionary logistics from this week.
The RAF's specialist logistics contribution to supporting expeditionary operations is 85 (Expeditionary Logistics) Wing (85(EL) Wg) — and home for 400-plus personnel transferred today from their old location at RAF Stafford, which closes this week, to their new Cambridgeshire Base.
RAF Wittering remains a front line station, the only change being it passes from 1 Gp to Logistics and the next Stn Cdr will be the first not to be a Harrier pilot.

RAF Wittering is a Royal Air Force station near Stamford, Lincolnshire.
Although Stamford is the nearest town, the runways of RAF Wittering cross the boundary between Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.
This role will continue with the move of several support units such as 2 MT Squadron, the Mobile Catering Support Unit (MCSU) and 5001 Squadron to Wittering from 16 MU RAF Stafford and elsewhere.

The Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) based at RAF Leuchars is one of five MRTs, all of which are located in the UK.
Although established to go the aid of pilots and passengers of aircraft that have crashed or force-landed in the upland regions of the UK, most callouts are for injured or missing climbers and walkers.
RAF Leuchars' MRT's 'area of responsibility' lies between the English / Scottish border and a line drawn between Aberdeen and Oban, however they are often required to operate and train outside this theoretical boundary.

The Ministry of Defence is to downgrade RAF Buchan in Aberdeenshire with the loss of almost 350 jobs, in order to move the air surveillance operation to RAF Neatishead in Norfolk.

RAF Stafford Wing Commander Shaun Tyrer will be presenting a cheque for £1,500 to the maternity ward at Staffordshire General Hospital on Friday April 29, following a year-long series of fundraising events by RAF personnel.
The money comes from the station’s charity fund for last year, and the grand total of £1,509.81 was raised by dozens of events involving staff from across the base.
The ward was chosen as the beneficiary of the fund after being nominated by airwoman Tash Garnett-Smith, of the Mechanical Transport Squadron at RAF Stafford, who gave birth at Staffordshire General Hospital and wanted to say thanks by giving something back to the unit.

As far as I remember nearly the whole course was posted to No 16 MU RAF Stafford, in the Midlands not far from where I used to live.
Perhaps this indicates what a big RAF Station Stafford was, because as far as I remember all the coach passengers were RAF types returning from weekend leave, in fact coaches from all over used to travel to Stafford on a Sunday night returning airmen back to camp.
Whilst in the RAF, apart from the fact that I never went to a “proper” station, I think my biggest regret is not buying a motorcycle, whenever going through the town of Stafford, either on my way to Burton or Devon, I would pass this motorcycle shop.

The courses are quite difficult to come by and successful applicants will have been on at least one UK camp, be L98 trained, have an RAF Swimming Proficeincy Certificate, be very enthusiastic and physically fit.
The course that I was in attendance at was in the summer of 2000 at CTC Frimley Park, and without hesitation, it was a brilliant and thouroughly enjoyable experience.
I believe that the course at CTC Frimley Park is very similar to the one at RAF Stafford, although the badges you get are different.
