The RAF Tornado F3 is a fighter/interceptor version of the Panavia Tornado in service with the Royal Air Force.
It is a long ranged twin engine aircraft, originally designed to intercept Soviet bombers as they came in from the east to strike the United Kingdom.
The F3 is based at RAF Leeming[?], RAF Leuchars[?], and RAF Mount Pleasant[?].

The Typhoon is an agile, single seat, multi-role aircraft optimised for high altitude supersonic air combat but also capable of operating at much lower levels in the air-to-ground roles.
For these, Typhoon can be equipped to undertake both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions in a single sortie, switching between the two separate attack modes in flight, something not possible with a Tornado GR4 for example.

As the OEU on the Typhoon they re-formed alongside the British Aerospace (BAe) test pilots at Warton airfield where the Typhoon is built.
Now based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire 17 Squadron flies both the Typhoon T1 (two seat version) and Typhoon F2 (single seat) versions, their aircraft display their squadron badge on the tail, a gauntlet on a fl and white shield, they also wear fl zig zags on a white flash below the cockpit.

Unlike cars which are similar to drive and have the same sort of equipment modern military aircraft require specialist training to operate them correctly, so, for each type of front line aircraft the RAF designates one squadron to fulfil the role of training aircrew who are converting to that type.
A good example of this is 29 Squadron who were the second unit to fly the new Typhoon within the RAF.

The RAF was out in force with displays from a Hawk T1, Tucano T1, C-130J Tac Demo aswell as the RAF Falcons, Chinook HC2, SeaKing HAR3A, Harrier Gr7, Tornado Gr4 and the Typhoon F2 as well as the BBMF trio of Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire.
The last hour of the day was almost totally devoted to RAF displays, the first being the C-130J Hercules performing the Tac Demo with it's trademark Khe Sahn descent visible from the airport, diving down towards the Thames Estuary before disappearing between the intervening skyline.
The show was closed by what must be the highlight, for the first time this year the RAF displayed the Typhoon F2 to the public.

When I came onboard the forum earlier in the week I promised I'd post some Typhoon images to help a modelling project, in particular the centreline tank now being carried by some of the inservice jets.
The wrong decal for the sqn badge has been added to the fin, it's the wrong way around!! I've photographed five of the nine/ten jets that have been delivered so far and it's the only one like it.
I remember some years ago something similar happened to the RAF fin flash on a Nimrod.

No 29 Squadron was formed at Gosport on 7 November 1915 from a nucleus supplied by No 23 Squadron and after training moved to France in March 1916 as the third squadron to be fully equipped with fighters.
The Squadron swapped its Phantoms for Tornado F3 fighters in 1987 remaining at Coningsby until disbanded in October 1998.
Five years later, the squadron was reformed, this time as the Typhoon operational conversion unit (OCU) based at BAE Systems' Warton airfield.
