The primary role of the RAF in the Cold War years was the defence of Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union.
RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.
Typhoon T1 The mainstay of the what the RAF calls its Offensive Support fleet is the Tornado GR.4.

 RAF Typhoon F2
The T1 and F2 are aircraft from "Tranche 1" of the Eurofighter programme.
Early RAF Typhoon's are based at BAE Systems' Warton airfield, where the aircraft are assembled.
The first Typhoon T1 is one of the Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA1) and remains part of the BAE fleet, the aircraft first flew on April 15 2002.

In July 2003 the Hawk 128 was selected as the new Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) for the RAF and Royal Navy fast-jet aircrew training.

RAF Cosford Air Show is the Midlands premier air event.
Of particular interest to enthusiasts this year will be a display by an RAF English Electric Canberra PR.9, a type about to end its service with the RAF after achieving the record of being the longest serving jet aircraft with any air force in the world.
Returning to Cosford this year will be one of the RAF's Chinook helicopters whose display was one of highlights of the 2005 event.

As negotiations continue on a Tranche 2 production order for the Eurofighter Typhoon, initial deliveries are enabling partners in the four-nation programme to begin introducing the new-generation strike aircraft and to define their future requirements for the type.
The purpose of Case White is to support the Typhoon until the aircraft's move to RAF Coninsgby in July 2005 and until the type can be deployed overseas in support of NATO commitments.
The use of RAF engineers to provide around half of the operation's staffing saves money on the contract and allows the service to gain valuable knowledge prior to the move to Coningsby, says Wg Cdr "Geordie" Evans, engineering officer for Case White and senior engineering officer for 17 Sqn.

In June the squadron moved to Brittany as the remnants of BEF and RAF units in France were evacuated, retiring to the Channel Islands two days before returning to the UK.

It was the first time that an RAF Typhoon had operated and displayed at the same venue - Cosford's display had to come from Shawbury due to runway limitations.
With another example on static, the two jets represented the RAF's biggest presentation of the aircraft to date, proving that the rumours of being unable to operate effectively away from Warton were unfounded.
They are the face of the RAF for ninety percent of the tax-paying population, as well as being the best sales vehicle for the Hawk overseas, which still has excellent sales potential.

In 2001, it was announced that the Royal Air Force (RAF) would not use the aircraft's internal 27mm Mauser cannon.
However in a third change of policy, the Daily Telegraph reported on 3 October 2006 that the RAF will acquire ammunition, spares and maintainence equipment and will train its Typhoon pilots to use the cannon.
The same report noted that the in-service date for Typhoon (2003; defined as the date of delivery of the first aircraft to the RAF) was 54 months late.

The next section of display time was largely filled with RAF displays seen at Cosford, leaving Ed and myself slightly bored, but was split by a very nice display from the USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon, AKA 'The Viper'.
Cater for transporting us about the country, and the RAF for hosting the event – and the people on the gates for being gullible enough to believe Ed was 15.

There were good performances from the USAFE Lockheed-Martin F-16C Fighting Falcon, Swedish Air Force SAAB JAS-39C Gripen, Italian Air Force Panavia Tornado MLU, the superbly presented U.S. Navy Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet and a somewhat limited display by the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon T1.
The 60th anniversary of D-Day was represented by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and several warbirds on static display including this Spitfire and Mustang.
It was good to see at least a little imagination in the flying display that included this air refuelling simulation from an RAF TriStar and VC10.

 FlyerTalk Forums - OT: London drinkies 22nd of July anyone? (And EDI on the following weekend - again!)
Farnborough yesterday was quite fun - although I did leave before the weather broke to play with babies.
The RAF was essentially shamed into providing a Typhoon display, so did at least get to watch it depart (it is so pretty :)) presumably to go and practice some more since it was put together at the last moment.
Lots of A380 buzz, although thought the Airbus stand not as good as in previous years.
