RAF Valley, situated on the south-western tip of the island of Anglesey in North Wales, has undergone many changes in recent years and now, more than ever, plays a crucial and exclusive role in training the future fast jet pilots and navigators for the RAF.
Valley was not the first airfield to open on Anglesey.
With the closure of the Tactical Weapons Units at RAF Brawdy, and latterly, RAF Chivenor, responsibility for providing all future aircrew to the RAF's fast-jet front line passed to Valley, and this remains the Station's primary function.

RAF Valley was reviewed in May 1996 which identified an increase in air movements and recommended a new survey, due to lack of manpower RAF Valley was predictively surveyed during the annual daily movement figures (ADM) obtained from the review, which found that small extensions to the 70dB(A) contour was needed.
RAF Valley was surveyed in late summer 1998, but unfortunately there was a severe lack of aircraft using the station at the time of the survey, which caused the survey to have to be cancelled.
RAF Valley was due to be reviewed in January 2006; unfortunately the placing of NIGS into suspension due to unavailability of money to fund the scheme has resulted in the postponement of the review for the foreseeable future.

RAF Valley is open as a diversion facility for both military and civilian aircraft on Monday to Friday from 0800 until 1800 hrs.
The ATC task at RAF Valley is not made any easier by the surrounding airspace and terrain, and whilst there are few other airfields in close proximity, there are many restrictions including controlled airspace, Aberporth and Llanbedr danger areas, and the mountains of Snowdonia (restricting radar cover to the south-east).
RAF Valley is one of the busiest flying stations in the Royal Air Force handling, on average, 65,000 movements per year.

Also based on the main airfield is the RAF College Air Squadron with Tutor T1s, and on the Cranwell North grass airfield is the Cranwell Gliding Club, part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA).
RAF Lossiemouth was built during 1938 and 1939 and opened on Ma 1, 1939 with No 15 Flying Training School as the major unit.

 Valley Photocall 2005
This years event was set to be a highlight of the year with one of the highlights being a couple of flypasts from a B1B Lancer from the USAF however the temperamental (to say the least) UK weather had a different idea.
RAF Valley is one of the busiest RAF Stations,it is home to both 19(R) and 208(R) Squadrons flying the BAe Hawk T1 in the training role prior to pilots going onto frontline squadrons.
On arrival at Valley in the early morning the base was cloaked in a veil of very low cloud and mist.

I managed to do all the basics using my "school level" German and French and by the time we arrived at Valley on the 9th I was happy with the basic camera operations, but having never used a DSLR/SLR before I stuck with "Sports" mode.
Due to the level of activity at Valley it is quite normal to find several aircraft in the circuit and multiple aircraft on the ground in various stages of their flights.
This aircraft, normally based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire was visiting along with a 100 Sqn aircraft also from Leeming.

Their primary role is to recover RAF personnel, but in peacetime, the majority of callouts are to civilian incidents.
RAF Search and Rescue crews were first on the scene.

With Valley ideally situated on the West Coast of the UK, this would prove to be Valley's primary function for the remainder of the war.
It was in 1951 that the station became part of Flying Training Command, which saw the commencement of RAF jet training from Valley, and has subsequently proved to be their primary raison d'être for the last 50 years.

In the current RAF training programme, the Hawk T1 is the first jet aircraft that a student pilot will fly.
Aircraft were delivered with the ability to carry weapons and so some of the Valley- and Brawdy-based Hunters used for weapons training were retired and a new single-aircraft syllabus developed to take advantage of the Hawk's capabilities.
With the reduction in RAF training requrements, the Hawk fleet is now concentrated at Valley, and many of these aircraft will be modified in the coming years to extend their service life well into the new millennium.

The weather held until early afternoon and the 700 assembled guests were treated to being close to the action as the aircraft came in and out of the station and also witnessed first hand normal operations at one of the busiest military airfields in the UK.

The Wessex based at Valley from 1976 was retired in June 1997 and replaced by the Sea King which offers an increase in range, load capacity and an enhanced night and bad weather capability.
The six UK-based RAF SAR teams work alongside two RN and four civilian coastguard teams, which together ensure that no part of the UK is more than an hour from their reach during daylight hours, or an hour and a half by night.
The RAF also operates SAR teams in Cyprus and The Falkland Islands, but the majority of their work is here in the UK.

RAF Valley is designed to be an access point to the North eastern part of Wales for which there are very few add-ons for in CFS1 or 2 (in fact I seem to be the only person to bother with it!).
The runways are in the right places and are the right length and the control tower is also in the same place as the original however the rest is created using artistic licence and a bit of imagination.
There are several hangars and static Spitfires and RAF liveried Mustangs.
