RAF Waddington is a Royal Air Force station in Lincolnshire England.
RAF Waddington has in the last few years revived its Waddington International Air Show, which usually takes place in the last weekend of June, attracting up to 100,000 visitors and representatives of Air Forces from all round the world.
There is a outdoor viewing area east of the A15 road close to the northern end of the long runway which was designed to accommodate V-bombers.

 UK Airshow Review - "Eastern Promise" - RAF Waddington International Airshow 2005
Kicking off the flying display, as per usual at RAF Waddington, was the flypast by the "home team" of an E-3D Sentry and a Nimrod R.1 from 51 Squadron, which was followed by a break and an overshoot from each aircraft.
The full compliment of RAF display teams, from Tutors to Typhoons, were all present in the flying display, in addition to the Royal Navy's Black Cats Lynx duo flying their ever polished and entertaining routine.
Often seen at Waddington in the ACMI days, I've never seen a display by the type before, and the excellently flown pairs routine at this years airshow was a pleasant break from the norm.

RAF Lyneham cantered to the inter-station cup with a powerful display against RAF Waddington in the final at RAF Uxbridge.
But Waddington will point to the 14th minute sending off of Phil Dodd as a major factor in their defeat which weakened their team and left them at the mercy of a stronger Lyneham squad.
Waddington's 10 men fought all the way in the first half after the red card and were on level terms just before the break through Mark Wagstaff.

For almost 30 years, Waddington became a mecca for Vulcan-watchers but just as the type was finally leaving RAF service, Argentina invaded the Falklands and a number of Vulcans were hastily deployed to Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic.
Today, Waddington is the RAF's main reconnaissance base and is home to 4 squadrons; No 8/23 Squadron flies the Sentry AEW1 in the Airborne Warning and Control (AWACS) role; No 51 Squadron with the Nimrod R1 electronic intelligence aircraft and, most recently No 5 (Army Co-operation) Squadron with Sentinel R1 battlefield surveillance aircraft.
Known as the WAVE (Waddington Aircraft Viewing Area) it is located next to the 21 end of the airfield adjacent to the A15.

Becky Griffith from RAF Brize Norton was second but first RAF finisher in 71 min 15 sec, and in third overall in the ladies race was D Bryant from Biggleswade AC 71 min 17 sec.

 The Prince of Wales - HRH visits RAF Waddington
The Prince joined the RAF in 1971 and attended the RAF College at Cranwell in Lincolnshire.
RAF Waddington, formerly the home of the Vulcan bomber, is the base for four squadrons flying the Nimrod and Sentry aircraft, which carry out electronic reconnaissance and battlefield surveillance.
In recent years personnel from Waddington have been deployed to the Middle East, North America and the Balkans, as well as more recent duties in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Waddington secured first team in the RAF and Open event, the quartet of Sgt Gittings, WO Wintripp, Sgt Flavell and Sgt Pallot, second in the Open event was DISC Chicksands who just held off Brampton Wyton Henlow (BWH), 113 points to 114.
The RAF Ladies Champion was Flt Lt Beccy Screech of RAF Honington finishin 5th overall.
The RAF is not able to enter a team for this event so all of the individuals have to run for their civilian clubs.

Both Wk163, operated by Air Atlantique and RAF Canberra XH135 could be seen in and around the hangar as part of a display paying tribute to the aircraft.
Other interesting items to be seen among the static were two F15 Eagles, German Tornado IDS and it was good to see a pair of Jaguar GR3s on the line with their retirement creeping ever closer, despite the barriers being somewhat tight to the aircraft which made decent photography difficult to carry out.
The final RAF examples of this legendary aircraft, in service with 39 (1 PRU), are due to be finally retired in July 2006.

 207 Squadron RAF Association - In Memory of the Siebert Crew, Manchester L7303 RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire
This was put together as a memorial to her husband and to the rest of the Siebert crew by Mrs Pam Gurnell, widow of Sgt Peter Gurnell, the Rear Gunner in the Siebert crew, who was one of the five crew members taken prisoner.
It was framed by RAF Waddington and presented to the Station on 14 November 1993 and hangs in the corridor outside the Nettleton Room.
The RAF Hospital Halton treated him with great devotion and all the skill at their command, certainly prolonging his life for several years.

The RAF Waddington International Airshow is the first very large military airshow of the year and therefore is the first really major international flying display of the year making it perhaps one of the most eagerly anticipated.
Waddington have taken the brunt of this and recent programmes have looked quite depleted compared to the glory days of 2001 which had participation from Israel, US and several european nations.
Waddington certainly left enthusiasts and the general public alike feeling satisfied with their day's entertainment, it was certainly a well presented display that would have appealed to all.

The RAF AWACS fleet is made up of seven E-3Ds, with the UK designation Sentry AEW1 and the aircraft are pooled between 8 Sqn and No.

Waddington to be present in the static display, however this was not possible due to the first example having been delivered so recently therefore not being available for the show.
Star displayers of the present RAF frontline jet fleet in the flying display had to be the two variants of the Tornado, GR4 and F3 with the pilots of both aircraft really showcasing the brute force of their aircraft.
The typhoon is the expected replacement for the current RAF Tornados, Harriers and Jaguars.

RAF Waddington is located East of Waddington village, between the A607 and A15, 3 miles South of Lincoln in Lincolnshire.
Waddington is a 24-hour emergency diversion airfield, so occasionally aircraft will divert here if they have problems or their destination is weathered in.

2006 saw Waddington celebrate the end of the Canberra's 55 years of service to the RAF and the 70th Anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire.

RAF Aircraft participation is always strong with Jaguars, Hawks, Harriers Tornado F.3 and GR.4 variants.
Being in close proximity to Fighter bases, Waddington had Tornado F.3 examples from the Squadrons of 11 and 25 both from RAF Leeming in Yorkshire.
Waddington seems to suffer from decreasing numbers of foreign participants but the Royal Air Force always turns up in force.
