The primary function of RAF Barkston Heath is as a Relief Landing Ground for the flying training activities at RAF Cranwell.
RAF Brampton Wyton Henlow is the result of a number of merges: Brampton with Wyton in the mid-1990s, followed by the addition of Henlow on 1 Apr 01.
RAF Henlow has been a ground-training base specialising in electronics since the end of the Second World War and was for many years synonymous with the RAF Signals Engineering Establishment (RAFSEE).

RAF Wainfleet is a Royal Air Force weapons range on The Wash on the east coast of England.
Other ranges nearby include RAF Holbeach, also on The Wash, and Donna Nook.
The range is a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to the large number of resident and migrating birds found there.

RAF Wainfleet was opened in Aug 1938 as a range for gunnery and bombing.
Wainfleet was used for aircraft armament training throughout the Great War, initially by RNAS aircraft from HMS Deadalus (now RAFC Cranwell) and from No.4 School of Aerial Fighting based at Freiston Air Station.
RAF Wainfleet is today known as the Wash (North Side) bombing range.

RAF Wainfleet weapons range is one of two such facilities situated on The Wash, the other being RAF Holbeach, there is also RAF Donna Nook to the north of Wainfleet at North Somercotes.
Although an RAF facility, RAF Wainfleet employs a number of civilian workers whom manage the facility maintenance, assist in the control tower with target scoring and deal with ordnance clearance from the range.
The casual observer sees only a bleak and inhospitable area of coastline, but the sands and marshes are an ideal habitat for the flora and fauna which remain largely undisturbed by the general public.

Squadrons from both the USAFE and RAF participated in pitting their ground attack skills at RAF Holbeach and RAF Wainfleet ranges in Lincolnshire where awards were given for individual, squadron and wing performances.
RAF squadrons that participated were 6 Sqn and 41 Sqn from RAF Coltishall, flying the Jaguar GR3 and 9 Sqn from RAF Marham, flying the Tornado GR4.
All three of the RAF squadrons flew from their home bases where the ranges are only a matter of minutes away for the fast jets.

However, this newcomer to the task pushed the R/T button at the bottom of the dive over the Wainfleet salt marshes in the belief that it was the bomb release; he then pulled up steeply and pressed the bomb release to advise the range of the release of his target indicator.
The size of the Army was such that the RAF could not expect any assistance from that quarter, neither was the RAF Regiment capable of providing more than a token force for this task.

On completion of the Wainfleet part of the exercise they then transit directly to RAF Holbeach, roughly fifteen miles south, where they complete the bombing exercise at low level.

The aircraft, from the 20th Tactical Fighter Wing at Upper Heyford, was crewed by Pilot Capt James Stieber and WSO Capt Robert Gregory.

These were followed on Wednesday August 17, by the 52nd Fighter Wing machines from Spangdahlem AFB in Germany, which were five F-16s operated by the 22nd ‘Stingers’ Fighter Squadron, three F-16s operated by the 23rd ‘Hawks’ Fighter Squadron and four A-10’s operated by the 81st ‘Panthers’ Fighter Squadron.

 Red Nose bombing competition 2001
A great two days competition was had over 15/16 March, but unfortunately behind 'closed doors' as far as the public was concerned due to the Foot and Mouth disease precautions.
Every strike Squadron in the RAF was invited to attend, operational circumstances permitting, with £50 as an 'entry fee'.
Prize going to the most accurate unit, as last time, was a crate of beer from Batemans, a local brewery in Wainfleet.

The 'legend' of Operation Harry-Air Bear was included in the Chief Of The Air Staff's report to Her Majesty The Queen on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, 2002.
His final base was RAF Cottesmore, once again back in the seat of the Harriers.
The only squadron in the whole of the RAF that Harry-Air had not managed to fly with was 230Sqn based in Northern Ireland.
