  RAF Sculthorpe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RAF Sculthorpe is a helicopter training facility for the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, situated about 3 miles west of Fakenham in Norfolk.
RAF Sculthorpe was built as the second satellite airfield of RAF West Raynham a few miles to the south, the first being RAF Great Massingham.
Due to a shortage of space at Sculthorpe, the 86th BS operated from RAF Alconbury as a detachment of the 47th.

Formed in the storm and stress of war in 1942, the RAF Regiment was born of the official recognition of the necessity for an indigenous and credible RAF ground defence force.
RAF units attempting to withdraw from the Continent during the Battle of France in June 1940 were badly mauled by rapidly advancing German air and ground units.
RAF Regiment training schools were quickly established across the UK, with officers and Gunners being trained to operate as infantry, armoured car crewmen and air defence artillerymen.

 Bloodhound SAM - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bloodhound served the RAF throughout almost the entire Cold War.
The first site to be developed solely for the Mk II system was RAF West Raynham, Norfolk, construction beginning in 1964.
As at 2006 the only surface-to-air missile in RAF service is the Rapier missile which has a much shorter range and a very much lower altitude capability.

 RAF Massingham
RAF Massingham began as a satellite grass airfield to nearby RAF West Raynham in 1940.
Even 100 Group which replaced 2 Group at Massingham, West Raynham and Swanton Morley, have not until recently been given serious study by historians, because they were only "Bomber Support", a back-up for the main offensive against Germany.
Massingham was transferred to 12 Group Fighter Command at West Raynham and for a further 4 years the Central Flying Establishment continued to use the site.

Frank was posted to Watton as one of the crews to replace the eleven lost on the 17th May 1940 on a raid to Gembloux in Belgium.
Signals arrived at the Royal Air Force station at west Raynham, Norfolk, late in the afternoon of May 18th, 1940, ordering 12 Blenheim crews to report to 82 Squadron at Watton, Norfolk, immediately.
At that time I was serving in the RAF as an Air Observer and was stationed at West Raynham.

Barbara [10] the first born unfortunately she only survived 24 hours after birth, in January 1920, apparently she was named Barbara because no other person had this name in the village of Boxford; it is believed that her second given name could have been Evelyn.
The third child born was Charles Maurice Richard Raynham [13] on the 26 January 1927 at Boxford.
This latter event has significance for the Raynham family as it was Barbara's second cousin Freddie Phillip Raynham [20] (1893-1954) who had tried to fly the Atlantic some weeks prior to Alcock and Brown's successful flight.

 RAF BD in Detail
RAF Bomb Disposal qualifying courses were started in March 1940 at the School of Technical Training at Melksham in Wiltshire where selected personnel from the flights with the rank of Leading Aircraftsman were sent to undergo training in the art of Bomb Disposal.
They are equipped with highly sophisticated equipment borne out of necessity in the hostile environments of places like Northern Ireland and the Former Yugoslavia where the ever inventive terrorist plays a dangerous chess game with the lives of the EOD Operators.
The exploits of the RAF BD organisation are remembered in the number of awards for War Operations, some of which are listed here.

On 3 Sep 39, the day war broke out, the research establishment at RAF Bawdsey was disbanded and relocated to many different places because the location was considered to be high risk being on the south east coast of England.
Although I had served at RAF Marham on Bloodhound Mark Is in the early 60s, I still did not feel I had the expertise to form this judgement.
In February 1986, RAF West Drayton was transferred from No 11 Group to MATO and the School became an independent unit of No 11 Group.

In an effort to suppress continued attacks on the Dhala road, Radfan Force 'Radforce' is established with a brief to end the activities of dissidents in the Radfan, to stop the spread of revolt and to hold the Dhala road open.
RAF Hawker Hunters played a key role in the campaign and in May and June they flew 642 sorties and fired 2,508 rockets and 183,900 rounds of 30mm Aden cannon ammunition.
A Tripartite Squadron, comprised of United Kingdom, United States and West German forces, is established at RAF West Raynham to evaluate the Hawker P1127 (Kestrel) Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) strike fighter aircraft.

Operation Mop Up: repeated attacks by Hawker Hunters from RAF Chivenor and RAF West Raynham, using bombs and rockets, assisted Hawker Siddeley Buccaneers of the Fleet Air Arm to break up the Very Large Crude Carrier Torrey Canyon.
The tanker had gone aground on the Seven Stores Reef, near Lands End; the sorties were intended to destroy much of her 120,000 ton cargo of crude oil, which was polluting both the sea and nearby Cornish beaches.
RAF Transport Command is renamed RAF Air Support Command and given greatly increased responsibility for fulfilling the long-range strategic and tactical air support and assault roles.

Alwyn has 3-younger brothers and a younger sister; his sister lives in Glamorgan and owns her own hair salon; his youngest brother has recently retired from the RAF Regiment to settle in South Wales; his second youngest brother works for Alcatel in Newport; and his third brother is an RAF Sergeant stationed in Cyprus.
His first RAF tour of duty was at RAF Boulmer (Northumberland) but he promptly started specialist training at RAF Newton (Nottinghamshire) on the Bloodhound Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system as a Launch Control Post (LCP) Fitter.

 Wattisham Mk. 2 Bloodhound Missile Site
The missile squadron at West Raynham remained until September 1970 when it was moved to West Germany, but West Raynham was retained as a service centre and was known as the Bloodhound Support Unit.
In 1975, 85 Squadron was redeployed from West Germany to West Raynham, which became the headquarters of the Bloodhound Force in the 1980's incorporating the existing Bloodhound Support Unit.
It was intended that Bloodhound should remain at Wattisham and West Raynham until 1995, but in early 1991 it was announced that the Bloodhound Force was to be stood down and the squadron was disbanded on 1 July that year.

 English Electric Canberra
Built at Preston in 1952 it arrived with the RAF in September 1952 as a B.2 variant but was employed as a trials aircraft for all 33 years of its working life.
After serving in Malta, it was transferred to 231 OCU at RAF Bassingbourn from where, in 1969, it was moved to the RAF Museum at Henlow and eventually RAF Hendon.
Its RAF life started in 1954 with 207 Sqd at RAF Marham and then transferred to 35 Sqd on the same station when 207 was disbanded in 1956.

This period of study was followed by a posting to RAF West Raynham and No 66 Sqn RAF Regiment in January 1992 as an Instructor In Gunnery.

A Norfolk MP has said that it is a "scandal" that 100 houses at a redundant airbase have been left empty for eight years, while there is a shortage of affordable homes in the region.
Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, is calling on the government to release the homes at RAF West Raynham, Norfolk.
At RAF West Raynham there are more than a 100 empty family homes - most have two or three bedrooms, garages, fitted kitchens.

No 18 Sqd returned to West Raynham on the 23rd August 1942 flying Blenheim V, they left for the Middle East, in November 42.
West Raynham was finally closed for flying in 1975, becoming a base for Bloodhound missiles.

On his death, according to Mrs Paul's Grandmother and father, two senior RAF Officers visited their home and 'took over' making all the funeral arrangements cars etc. There was a cortege, a full guard of honour and a contingent representing the RAF present at the service.
Her mother who lived in Lincoln as a child and knew many in the RAF said that it was not typical of the funerals for people she knew of.
September 1957, three RAF Police NCOs, Flight Sergeant J W S Child, Corporal C S Middleton and Corporal D L Waterman were on duty at RAF West Raynham in Norfolk, when they witnessed an American B-45 tornado jet bomber crash on the outskirts of the station.

Once unloaded, the aircraft were towed though the streets to Renfrew RAF Station to clean off the anti-corrosion compounds and given a preflight inspection.
The first air show that I can remember was a military show at RAF West Raynham and the second was at Orly Field in Paris.
The first air show of the season was again at West Raynham and the second was on 1 July 1951 at Le Bourget in Paris.

 West Raynham Norfolk
The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall is one of the most famous hauntings in Britain, because of the strange form captured by photographers from 'Country Life' magazine in 1936.
The RAF had a base 2 miles from West Raynham from the 1930s, but this closed in the 1990s and the land has now been sold by the MOD.
It fell into ruin from the 1720's when the roof lead was removed, to help pay for the restoration of St. Mary's, in East Raynham, but it has since been partially restored and is used occasionally.

In 1987, Her Majesty The Queen approved a proposal by the Air Force Board to allow battle honours approved by Her Majesty to be emblazoned on squadron Standards.
Squadrons which participated in operations, albeit at a slightly lower level of danger, are awarded the Battle Honour without the right to emblazon the honour on their Standards.
Note: 1 Sqn RAF Regt where the only Sqn to have the Gulf 1991 emblazoned as they where in direct contact with the enemy.
