Originally opened as an RFC training base in 1916 as Stamford airfield, it was renamed RAF Wittering in 1918 and by 1924 had become home to part of the Central Flying School, which had moved in from Upavon.
In 1941, its western boundary was extended to take in the nearby RAF Collyweston and a much larger RAF Wittering emerged.
Wittering is a large base and as well as giving Harrier crews and support teams plenty of different types of surface to practice on, it has also been used as a stores concentration area for northern England, where large scale overseas operations have required support.

RAF Wittering is actually two airfields that have merged together; unfortunately this and the A1 have made access for viewing rather difficult to say the least.
While RAF Wittering is officially 'The Home of the Harrier', you'll see far more of them at RAF Cottesmore.
The RAF Police are normally okay about photographing the Harrier, especially if you pre-empt their objections by saying you'll only photograph facing away from the gate, out towards the A1.

Defence Internet | About Defence | DS&C OHS - NIGS RAF Wittering
RAF Wittering was surveyed in September 1989 using a predictive (computer modelling) method to gauge the impact of aircraft movements at the station.
Wittering was reviewed in 1994 and recommended a new survey be undertaken, which was conducted in September 1995, which showed that the contours defined in 1991 were still reflective of the current noise environment, and therefore there was no necessity for a new scheme to be implemented.
In accordance with the policy, RAF Wittering was reviewed in 2003 and movements were found to have decreased, so the contours defined in 1991 remained valid, and a new survey was not required.

Catherine and Darby Dennis are delighted that the High Court says that they are not expected just to put up with the ‘fearsome’ noise of Harrier training from RAF Wittering that blights their lives and home at Walcot Hall, Near Stamford.
Walcot is right in line with the runway at Wittering, and Harriers doing circuit training and landing approaches create what the court said “manifestly amounts to a nuisance”.
Contrary to Government claims of a right to create a nuisance because it has gone on for a long time, or because it is in the public interest, MrJustice Buckley said that “selected individuals should not bear the cost of the public benefit”.
