RDOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RDOS, or the Real-time Disk Operating System, was a real-time operating system released in 1972 for the popular Data General Nova and Data General Eclipse minicomputers.
RDOS could run up to 32 "tasks" (similar to threads on modern computer CPUs) simultaneously within a 64K memory space.
Later versions of RDOS were compatible with Data General's 16-bit Eclipse minicomputer line.

RDOS 1.00 began beta in late 1971, and was officially announced in 1972.
RDOS was immediately popular, as it was a capable and relatively easy-to-use interactive system for both developing programs and for running them.
RDOS was never popular in academia, as other operating systems similar to it were, and hence its base of users who fondly remember it as their "first OS" is small.

The power to coerce that RDOS gave the defendant was enhanced by the fact that many of defendant's customers were "locked in" to the use of RDOS.
RDOS was the only operating system that would allow them to realize the benefit of their investment in application software, an investment that in some cases totalled millions of dollars.
Conceding that the copyright on RDOS and the trade secrets involved in its creation precluded development by defendant's competitors of "compatible" software, the court held plaintiffs had failed to prove the effect of defendant's copyright and secrets on the development of software "comparable" to RDOS.

RDOS is actually a kernel which has its own API, and quite a powerful one for the time.
RDOS commands and options are consistent, a command name followed by options delimited by slashes, and then arguments also optionally followed by slash-delimited options.
In RDOS parlance, as distinct from the rest of the world, this simply means telling RDOS about its existence, not wiping it clean as it usually means to other OSes.

But for the complaining RDOs to say that the reorganization caused widespread demoralization in the BIR is inaccurate.
Besides, says the RDO, the "level of acceptance" of Bañez at the BIR is high--"8.5 in a scale of 10." He reveals that most BIR employees are aware that Bañez is "one of the most knowledgeable tax lawyers around" and has "unquestionable competence."
Some people within BIR suggest that since RDOs, armed with security of tenure, are not likely to stop being corrupt or incompetent even if they are assigned elsewhere, it might be best to lessen opportunities for graft.

Do not confuse the RDO ‹f,a› with the function call f(a,D), RDOs represent abstract values that are independent of the structure and contents of the database, and independent of the function bound to f.
Because of the abstractness of RDOs, one cannot simply maintain a list of which database objects the user is allowed to operate on: policies can depend on the contents of the database and database functions may be rewritten to keep up with changes to database schemas.
For every RDO ‹f,a› such that f(a,D) is nonempty, there is a tuple t in T(f,D) such that (a) the attribute for a given parameter of f contains the value of the corresponding argument in a and (b) the value attribute contains the value f(a,D).
