Radio Data System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RDS is standard in Europe since the early 90s, but less so in North America.
The 57kHz was chosen for being the third harmonic (3×) of the pilot tone for FM stereo, so it would not cause interference or intermodulation with it, or with the stereo difference signal at 38kHz (2×).
Most RDS capable receivers display this information and, if the station is stored in the receiver's presets, will cache this information with the frequency and other details associated with that preset.

RDS TMC (Radio Data System – Traffic Message Channel) is a globally acknowledged standard for broadcasting traffic data over the RDS sub-carrier on FM radio.
The data is coded in accordance with the TMC standard and can be decoded by the motorist’s satellite navigation system to provide the driver with verbal or visual messages that provide information relevant to the location and/or route of the vehicle.
The TMC standard is administered by an industry body, The TMC Forum, which is overseen by ERTICO, a Brussels based organisation funded jointly by its members and the European Union.

 Blaupunkt - Technology - TMC
The Radio Data System (RDS) has been considerably expanded by a new generation in the transmission of traffic information: TMC.
TMC reports the event, the location and the type of traffic congestion.
The message is then stored in the Blaupunkt TMC receiver and can be retrieved at the touch of a button: "Tailback after accident on the M25 travelling towards Heathrow after the junction at Leatherhead, tailback 8 m long".

*RDS is the limited bandwidth data channel associated with FM radio broadcasts.
This channel is used in part to carry the name of the radio station and data on the alternative frequencies that the radio station is also broadcasting on.
TMC takes the concept one stage further by continuously broadcasting the current traffic information within a dedicated part of the radio broadcast network which can be read by a vehicle’s on-board navigation system or other such device if equipped with an FM receiver.

ICDN: Ken Orski on The RDS (Radio Data Systems) Technology Gap
The RDS signals are beamed in the form of "event codes" and "location codes" over a digital data sideband of regular FM audio channel.
The RDS radio receivers, tuned to a designated FM subcarrier frequency, will alert their owners about traffic incidents relating to the driver's frequently traveled route segments stored in the receiver's memory.
But, unlike Europe where RDS radio receivers are available at prices only slightly higher than those of conventional radios, and are increasingly being installed as standard equipment in new cars, U.S. car manufacturers have adopted a wait-and-see attitude.

The GTM 10 is a small FM-band traffic receiver that connects inbetween your car stereo and antenna to provide real-time Traffic Message Channel (TMC) data to compatible Garmin GPS navigation products—which then depict and identify problem areas on their moving-map displays.
Digitized and coded real-time traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel—which means that drivers can still listen to music or news programming on their car radios, without interference from the incoming FM traffic data transmissions.
In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous—there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts.
