Topic: REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder

Rapid eye movement behavior disorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rapid eye movement behaviour disorder, or RBD was first described in 1986 as a parasomnia involving dissociation of the characteristic stages of sleep.
These behaviours are often violent in nature and commonly result in injury to either the patient or their bed partner.
Such disorders include sleepwalking and sleep terrors, which are associated with other stages of sleep, nocturnal seizures and obstructive sleep apnea which can induce arousals from REM sleep associated with complex behaviours.

REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) - SleepChannel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The basic mechanism for REM sleep paralysis is found in the brainstem, the part of the brain that connects the spinal chord to the cerebral hemispheres and that consists of the pons, midbrain, and the medulla oblongata.
Physicians and sleep technicians hypothesize that the brain naturally and purposely prevents motor activity during REM sleep to ensure restful, inactive sleep during the most electrically active stage of sleep.
In this context, sleep paralysis describes a normal state of sleep, unlike sleep paralysis experienced in narcolepsy, which affects people while they are trying to stay awake.

BUPA health news - Antidepressants 'linked to sleeping disorder'
The disorder is caused by loss of muscle paralysis during the phase of sleep known as rapid eye movement - or the dream stage - when paralysis of the body normally prevents people from acting out their dreams.
Robert Auger, sleep medicine specialist for the Mayo Clinic, said that doctors should be aware of this potential side-effect, especially in patients under 30 who complain of sleep disturbances.
A third possibility is that a common factor causes both the sleeping disorder and depression.

 Health 24 - News, Sleep
REM sleep behaviour disorder is when people thrash about in their sleep, moan, speak, act out their dreams, get out of bed and even pummel their bed partners, explains study author Dr Sid Gilman, chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.
The disorder is also associated with high blood pressure, heart disease and a higher incidence of stroke.
We found a very tight correlation [between the severity of REM sleep behaviour disorder and the level of decrease in dopamine], so this suggests that there's a causal effect, Gilman says.

What is REM sleep behavior disorder? | AskTheSleepExperts.com
REM sleep behavior disorder is actually the acting-out of a dream because of the absence of muscle atonia that normally occurs during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep.
In effect, when the dreaming stage of sleep is attained, the body fails to assume the sleep behavior which is paralysis, and adapts the waking stage instead, which means acting out whatever it is that transpires in the dream.
REM sleep behavior disorder is known to affect men in their 60’s and beyond.

 REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a newly described disorder, recognized as a distinct clinical entity following a series of reports in 1986 of adults with RBD.
Clinically, RBD is characterized by loss of normal voluntary muscle atonia during REM sleep associated with complex behaviour while dreaming.
The exact incidence and prevalence of the disorder are not conclusively known because of the inadequate and inaccurate nature of reporting and misdiagnosis.
