 A unity coalition
In addition, Respect repeatedly claims its successes to be the rapid fruit of a "new" party; when undoubtedly it is gaining, electorally, from votes gathered over previous years by its predecessor organisations, notably by the Socialist Alliance.
But what it is not doing is acting as a coalition for unity, especially regarding socialists, left-leaning greens, libertarians, peace campaigners or anyone with an activist background outside of the approved.
Respect is therefore preventing its foundation from looking and being anything other than monolithic in its political culture and composition.

 Respect Unity Coalition
Respect, by portraying itself as ‘the party for Muslims’, unfortunately has not challenged this approach, which will advance neither the real interests of workers who are Muslims nor aid the development of working-class unity".
Respect’s average vote disguised low results in many parts of the country, which were combined with several notable votes in inner-city areas with large Muslim populations.
RESPECT - THE Unity Coalition was formed by George Galloway MP and the Socialist Workers' Party (SWP) at the beginning of the year.

RESPECT The Unity Coalition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Critics of Respect such as the Socialist Party, as well as the Alliance for Workers' Liberty and Workers Power, former members of the Socialist Alliance, claim that it is undemocratic and has an overly London-centric, top-down approach, its initial programme having been created largely by negotiations between the SWP and George Galloway.
Respect has countered this claim by stating that it is simply false, that the Respect programme was formed as an "emergency response" to the June 10 European and local elections, and that a full constitution will be developed democratically through elections at its annual conferences.
In November 2005, Respect's largest single financial donor, Dr Mohammad Naseem, was accused in an article by Peter Tatchell of being homophobic due to his senior position in the Islamic Party of Britain, which he claimed advocated the "banning of gay organisations" and the "execution of homosexuals" [14].

Britain: The Respect-Unity coalition and the politics of opportunism Part One
Respect advances itself as a democratic alternative to Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Labour government and as a political vehicle through which the mass antiwar sentiment that brought nearly two million people onto the streets of London on February 15 last year can find expression.
Secondly, Respect’s denunciation of neo-liberalism is its way of confining the working class to a perspective of neo-Keynesian social reformism as opposed to an explicitly anti-capitalist and socialist perspective.
A success for Respect in the European elections could enable pressure to be brought to bear in the Labour Party to depose Blair as leader and tack left, he said.

Respect Unity Coalition - what we think : The Socialist 17 January 2004
THE RESPECT unity coalition (RUC) is an initiative from George Galloway MP, the Socialist Workers' Party (SWP) and others, centred around standing in the June European and Greater London Authority elections.
RUC must aim to win the most thinking sections of the working class and young people politicized by the anti-war movement.
However, even an electoral coalition requires negotiations and the right for all involved to discuss out, and where necessary, criticise the programme of the coalition both within it and in the labour movement.

 Butterflies and Wheels Article
It is ironic that the founders of Respect chose to subtitle their party “the Unity Coalition”, as many of their former allies showed little desire to show unity with them.
Respect claimed that they had been “snubbed” by the Greens, while the Green Party in their turn dismissed Respect as little more than an SWP front.
Respect activists trooped around the mosques of Britain (the Respect campaign in Wales was actually launched in a mosque), and no opportunity was missed to build links with the Muslim community.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Will the Unity Coalition Earn it?
The Coalition is aiming to contest both the European Parliament and the Greater London Assembly elections this coming June with a target of garnishing a million votes and the £1 million needed to fight both elections.
Rejected by the gathering and opposed by the Coalition’s steering committee on the basis that it would be difficult to convince the essentially conservative attitudes of the British public to abolish the monarchy.
Indeed, the other thorny issues that will confront the Coalition that were sidestepped included the issue of "open borders and an end to immigration laws" again on the basis that it will be difficult to persuade the not insignificant section of the public that is xenophobic and racist.

RESPECT was formed earlier this year in a hope to gain the votes of the thousands who took to the streets against the war.
They even argued that RESPECT would be a fighter for Muslims, refusing to point out that the Muslim community is as class ridden and hierarchical as any other.
While the leadership argued that RESPECT election results reflected the fact that it had only existed since January, the fact is that the SWP itself can be traced back 50 years.

Britain: The Respect-Unity coalition and the politics of opportunism Part Two
Respect has been founded on a perspective that is a step backwards even when compared to the founding of the Labour Party.
Contrary to Respect’s assertions, the antiwar movement is not a positive blueprint for the formation of a new party.
The democratic deficit identified by the Respect coalition is very real, but at its base it is rooted in an unprecedented social polarisation.

Socialist Green Unity Coalition - Indymedia Ireland
RESPECT has the support of workers from many cultural and religious backgrounds, including white workers, and we are extremely proud of that.
I would imagine if a unity coalition does take place in Ireland it would be more similar to this new red Green formation, that is an electoral list where the component parts keep their own name and support each other.
My point on respect was not that it is undemocratic and not based in the working class or sectarian, (you could be confusing me with colms post), I have serious reservations but not enough to publicly accuse it of anything.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T, standing for “Respect, Equality, Socialism, Peace, Environment, Community, and Trade Unionism”; was formed on 25 January when over one thousand people gathered in central London for the launching of the new organisation.
Unfortunately, since Respect is not direct about what exactly they are aiming for, and how it is to be achieved, they run the risk of becoming caught in the quagmire of popular but ineffectual reformism.
At the conference to launch Respect in Portsmouth, it was interesting to note that questions from the audience and replies from the speakers hinted that the Socialist Alliance was a spent force, and one that nobody would wish to see again.

A Debate on the ‘Respect’ Coalition
Ken Loach’s Left Coalition Could Let the Tories In YOUR REPORT of the recent Convention of the Left in Camden (CNJ, 11 December) didn’t mention an issue which was the subject of some dispute at the meeting, namely the new coalition’s plans to contest the London Assembly elections in June next year.
The fact is that Labour supporters are convinced that we have an excellent candidate, who enjoys wide support across the labour movement, and if she loses because of a sectarian intervention by Simon and his friends we will regard the "unity coalition" as little better than scabs and agents of the Tory party.
The unity coalition can stand for the Assembly if they want, both on the top-up list and in non-marginal constituencies.

Paul Foot , who is the most well-known member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), replied to my message on "Respect - the Unity Coalition".
It is true that the word "socialism" is mentioned on the front of Respect leaflets and postcards that are being used in the European elections (as one of the things that Respect stands for), but the politics on the backs of the leaflets and postcards are extremely watered down.
However, most people won't find out about those policies, and even if they do (from the website, talking about them face to face with a Respect member or from an election broadcast), it won't be very persuasive for those who realise that overthrowing big business is necessary.
