REX 5000 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Franklin REX 5, (also known as the “Rex-Pro”, as the “Rex 5000”, and with cosmetic variation as the “Rex 5001”) was one of the Rex line of Personal Digital Assistants, each a PCMCIA PC Card and thus the size of a credit card, built around a Toshiba microprocessor emulating a Zilog Z80.
Earlier models in this line (the Rex and the Rex-3) had almost no input possibilities except to download data when installed in a host computer or in a docking station; the Rex 5 added a sixth button and introduced a modal input method.
The REX 5000 was repackaged by Motorola as the StarTAC ClipOn Organizer, which piggybacked onto digital versions of their popular StarTAC phone (as well as some Timeport models), expanding the capabilities of the phone from having a capacity of 100 contacts to 1000, and adding calendar and note functionality.

The Rex Gauge Company worked with engineers at both Lockheed Martin and NASA for over a year in the development of a custom durometer (hardness gauge), which could be used by astronauts during spacewalks.

The Gadgeteer - Rex 6000 Review
The 6000 hardware is really quite impressive, but the entire package is less usable than the 5000 and Xircom has been unsupportive of their existing REX customers.
My only complaint about the REX 6000 hardware is that the new screen asks more of the processor than it can comfortably deliver, and so the device seems slower than the 5000, some operations (like drawing the world map for the time view) take several seconds.
The 6000's "applications" extend the set that run on the 5000, most are similar and in general a bit more intuitively laid out, and make good use of the touch screen for navigation.

You could try Xircom’s $199 REX 5000 Pro, a PIM that’s so small and handy you can carry it with you in a shirt pocket and still have room for your pens and handkerchief.
Xircom claims that REX represents “the next-generation in ultra-portable technology.” I don’t know about that, but it sure works for people who don’t want a PIM that does E-mail, word processing, and all the other overkill (I mean “value added”) features that make Palms and Pocket PC’s so flexible and pricey.
REX’s size and shape limit the choices, but if you keep your wits about you and do your data entry at home, REX could just be the perfect PIM for those whose needs are limited.

The REX 6000 review is so inaccurate and so at odds with the experience of most of the REX user community, I recommend that the content be revisited and that the factual inaccuracies be revised.
Further the 5000 is still available and at a very compelling price point, therefore the comparison to the earlier product is relevant both to existing 5000 users looking expectantly at the 6000 and to prospective REX buyers considering one or the other.
