In early 2000, the ship was diverted to (A republic on the eastern coast of Africa on the Mozambique Channel; became independent from Portugal in 1975) Mozambique to help with relief efforts against devastating floods.

The RFA really came into its own in World War II when the British fleet was often far from available bases, either due to the enemy capturing available bases, or, in the Pacific, the sheer distances involved.

Fort George, and her sister ship RFA Fort Victoria, combine the functions of ocean-going fast fleet support tanker and stores support ship - a new concept in logistics support policy at the time, as the prevailing fashion had been fro single-role support ships and tankers.
RFA Fort George was laid down at Swan Hunter on Tyneside in March 1989, and was launched by Lady Annie Slater, wife of the then Commander-in-Chief Fleet Admiral Sir Jock Slater, just under two years, just under two years later.
Fort George, returning to the UK from her role in Exercise Purple Star, off the American east coast, altered course and increased speed to reach the Canadian yacht.

Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Victoria (A387) was built by Harland and Wolff and her sister ship RFA Fort George (A388) was built by Swan Hunter Shipbuilders.
RFA Fort Victoria was part of the UK Royal Navy Task Group in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March / April 2004.
RFA Fort Victoria is also fitted with a two-spot flight deck, a hangar and maintenance facilities for five Sea King-sized helicopters.

Fort George, which has an RFA crew of 95, nine permanent Royal Navy staff, and 24 civilian stores personnel, left the UK in January for a deployment in the Gulf with HMS Illustrious.
Admiral Essenhigh's Commendation said: "Fort George demonstrated her versatility and capability throughout all departments of the ship, often entering and operating in unfamiliar and inadequately charted areas around the Beira Peninsula without the assistance of reliable pilots or tugs.
When Fort George finally arrived back in Plymouth on July 26 she had been away for 162 days, of which 136 had been spent at sea.

The captain of the Fort George has an extra reason to prepare against possibly suicide attacks using fast speed-boats launched from the shores of Morocco: his vessel is loaded to the gunnels with diesel, kerosene for fighter planes and helicopters, ammunition, missiles, anti-submarine depth charges and 'ordinary' bombs of the kind dropped by planes.
The Fort George - which is formally a 'Combined Fleet Support Tanker and Stores Ship' - not only carries all the supplies other vessels need during lengthy operations out at sea, but also houses a squadron of modern Merlin helicopters.
On Wednesday, for example, the author of this report found himself 'stuck' onboard the Fort George as a powerful storm meant the helicopters were temporarily unable to take off at all.

Two Fleet Air Arm Sea King helicopters from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Fort George rescued 14 people from a sinking cargo vessel in the north Arabian Sea on 27 January.
RFA Fort George was the task force vessel closest to the ship's position, and she launched a pair of Sea King helicopters to rescue the crew, the Parveen Sagar's master having decided to abandon ship.
The fourteen rescued were brought back safely to Fort George, which is en route for an Omani port to land them.

RFA Fort George (A388) left the River Tyne today following the completion of a two month refit at the Cammell Laird yard at Hebburn.
However, following a number of cancelled contracts Cammell Laird were forced to call in the receivers in April this year.
The departure of Fort George marks the end of work at the Tyneside yard, which will now be placed in mothballs retaining only a skeleton staff, pending sale.

The regeneration of Sea King helicopter pilot and observer training by 771 Squadron has been consolidated by a three aircraft embarkation in RFA Fort George for the Operational Conversional Phase (OCP).
We have had a very successful embarkation which could not have been achieved without the superb support of the Captain and crew of RFA Fort George”.
The successful completion of the embarked phase means that the students are nearing the end of their OCP with the Squadron and can look forward to being awarded their coveted ‘Wings’ in December.

The air coolers were inspected by appointed RFA engineering staff at several stages throughout the cleaning and testing process, and all parties were extremely satisfied with the results achieved.
Advocating ultrasonic cleaning techniques for many years, in 1992 Hedley Engineering created massive cost savings for the operators of the mv 'Arctic' by successfully cleaning and servicing the charge air coolers from the vessel's MAN V52/55 main engine, after several previous attempts at cleaning at various shipyards had proved inadequate.

The aircraft and crewmembers are assigned to Air Anti- Submarine Squadron (VS) 32 based out of Jacksonville, Fla. The S-3B Viking is a twinjet aircraft used for anti- submarine and anti-surface warfare as well as aerial refueling.

My first shore appointment came in June 1985 when I was appointed to Empress State Building in London as Engineer Superintendent to represent the RFA on the AOR Project during the tender award phase.
After contract award I was appointed to stand by the building of RFA Sir Galahad as Superintendent at the Swan Hunter shipyard and subsequently sailed in her as the first Chief Engineer Officer in 1988.
After a short relieving appointment in RFA Fort Victoria I was sent to RFA Fort George and am now in RFA Gold Rover in the Caribbean.

The ship is affiliated to South Tyneside and, during the visit, will renew links with South Tyneside Borough Council, Newcastle Nautical College and the local Sea Cadet Unit, TS Collingwood.
