RFA Broomdale was the first ship to be fitted with the new experimental gantry type kingposts equipped with two of the net defence derricks formally used for torpedo protection.
Hebe rescued British Nationals in Zanzibar in 1964 during a revolution.
After BI was absorbed by P&O the charter continued and remained as such until Hebe was severely damaged by fire in 1978 and she was handed back to P&O. She was later sold as is to be repaired for further trading to Greeks the following year becoming Guardian after repairs.

The RFA really came into its own in WWII when the British fleet was often far from available bases, either due to the enemy capturing available bases, or, in the Pacific, the sheer distances involved.
After 1945, the RFA assumed centre stage in supporting the operations of the Royal Navy in the many conflicts that the Navy was involved in.
The RFA performed important service to the Far East Fleet off Korea from 1950 until 1953, when sustained carrier operations were again mounted in Pacific waters.

Chartered by the RFA from the British Indian Steam Navigation Company (BISNCo.) and used for the transferal of stores between naval bases in the United Kingdom and abroad.
Measuring 397ft in length, 55ft in breadth and 22ft in draught, Hebe and Bacchus displaced 7,958 tons fully loaded.
Hebe was completed in September 1962, Bacchus in May 62.

 FleetWatch - Market Watch
was stunned to hear that Jim Hebe, President of Freightliner LLC, was ousted from his position as mother trucker of heavy truck manufacturing in the USA.
After all, Jim arrived in South Africa just recently to 21-gun salutes wherever he went and addressed the exclusive RFA club at it's annual gathering of the lions of South African road transport at their annual feasting in Skukuza.
Jim Hebe makes a point at a press conference during his recent South African tour while Geoff du Plessis of DaimlerChrysler looks on.

I was serving on the Hebe at the time with Capt. McCarthy who had sailed on her in the late 50's.
I believe she was towed out to sea and sank as a target somewhere near the Horsborough Light about 1968 or so.
Re comments on RFA SURF PATROL in Singapore - according to Capt. E.E. Sigwart's book (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) this was the YUNG HAO (Ex Kurosio Maru) sunk during the war and salvaged and operated by the China Merchants S.S. Commandeered for political reasons at the same time as the polish vessels.

We all managed to get into the life boats, but it was a few hours before we were all picked up, as there seemed doubt about the seriousness of the situation, by those ashore.
I recall staying with Chief Engineer Brian Davis, and possibly Steve Matthews,(but can't be sure) in a beautiful house for another week, (I think the owners were away), before we all boarded RFA Hebe, and were taken to Gan for the flight home.

It is envisaged that the site will grow as more pictures are found and you donate your photos and anecdotes of your time in the RFA.
Pictures of the newer RFA's as they roll off the production line and more of the characters that make the RFA.
