Olna was on hand for most of the conflict briefly sailing to Singapore for maintenance before returning and positioning herself further up the Gulf than any American warship dare go due to mines in the area.
During the scenario for exercise Kernow, which was held in force eight conditions, the RFA vessel Oakleaf took the role of tanker involved in a collision with the ferry Scillonian 111, south of Penzance.
Olna arrived at Portsmouth to await final disposal in October of 2000 as the new generation of ship Wave Knight was launched at Barrow-in-Furness.

The logistic transport capability of the RFA is now augmented by two new-build roll-on roll-off ferries of commercial design, tasked with providing the heavy-lift capability for the Joint Rapid Deployment Force.
RFA's SEA CRUSADER and SEA CENTURION, large ships of 21,000 tonnes but with a crew numbering just 17, have the capacity to move large amounts of heavy equipment at high speed to any parts of the world.

RFA Wave Knight will now be fitted out with the equipment and systems which she will need to replenish warships at sea before beginning sea trials towards the end of 2001.
Her sister ship, RFA Wave Ruler, is being built by BAe Systems at Govan shipyard and is due to be launched in February before entering service in September 2002.
RFAs Wave Knight and Wave Ruler are the replacements for the O-class oilers RFA Olna and RFA Olwen and they make use of some of the most advanced shipbuilding technology available.

RFA OLNA carried out her last refuelling-at-sea operation at the end of July, with HMS COVENTRY off the Devon Coast.
With a load displacement of 36,000 tonnes, RFA OLNA is one of the larger ships of the Fleet, and with a top speed of over 20 knots, she was designed to replenish a Naval Task Group underway at sea.
The second OLNA was built by Swan Hunters in 1945 and served briefly as a Royal Navy Ship before transfer to the RFA in 1946.

But her sea-going days for the RFA have come to end as she is due to be replaced by the Fast Fleet Tanker RFA Wave Knight which is being built at Barrow-in-Furness and is due to be launched at the end of September.
RFA Olna was popular for her elegant lines and traditional wooden decks.

In 1985 he transferred to the RFA as Second Officer and in 1986 attended the Royal Navy Frigate Navigator and Helicopter Controller's Courses.
He was promoted to First Officer in 1987, serving as Navigator/Operations Officer and Flight Deck Officer on a number of RFAs and was awarded the Gulf War Medal whilst serving on RFA Olna.
In 2001 he was appointed as the Chief Officer standing by the build of RFA Wave Ruler and has served as XO during her sea trials and operational tasking.

Two other Royal Naval vessels - the 'Olwen' and the 'Olna' (4) - which were sold to German shipbreaking company Eckhardt in 2000 ended up being broken on the beaches of the notorious scrap yards at Alang in India.
They were replaced by two new large fleet tanker ships RFA Wave Knight and FRA Wave Ruler, built by BAE Systems for the United Kingdom Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
The Olwen and Olna were bought by a German company called Eckhardt (a broker which is specialised in the illegal export of scrap vessels to the Far East).

The Royal Navy decommissioned two O-class RFA Fleet tankers during financial year 2000–01: RFA Olwen (commissioned in 1965) and RFA Olna (commissioned in 1966).

The first of two new large fleet tanker ships for the United Kingdom Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the RFA Wave Knight (A389) was launched in September 2000.
The second, RFA Wave Ruler (A390), is under construction at BAE's Govan yard and is due to be launched in March 2001.
