RHB Bank decided to replace their entire IT platform at branch level, in order to create common operating environment which would subsequently act as a consistent platform for growth and development across the branch network.
Their Singapore operations were a case in point, where a migration team from Malaysia undertook the implementation of the new platform in RHB Bank's eleven branches benefited from the experience gained in Malaysia in their own smooth and efficient rollout with no interruptions to the flow of business.

RHB Bank is the third largest in Malaysia and was created as a result of the merger between DCB Bank and Kwong Yik Bank on July 1st 1997.
However, the agency noted that RHB Bank's gross non-performing loans declined from 9% of loans at mid-1998 to 7% at year-end largely due to the sale of one third of its non-performing loans to Danaharta, the state agency set up for this purpose.
RHB Bank's non-performing loan ratio is expected to improve in 1999, possibly to less than 5%, when the good assets of Sime Bank are included in its books.

Canada's Bank of Nova Scotia confirmed on Friday it was looking out for acquisitions in Malaysia but denied a report that it planned to buy an indirect stake in the country's fourth-biggest lender.
Foreign banks are keen to expand in Malaysia, which has a young population with rising incomes and low interest rates, but they cannot own more than 30 percent of a local bank and are heavily restricted in the number of branches they can operate.
In Malaysia, banks are not allowed to enter bid talks without approval of the central bank, which is viewed as being reluctant to allow a foreign bank to gain management control.
